Metastatic Ovarian Teratocarcinoma in a Horse.
Abstract: A 3-year-old Quarter Horse mare presented with an approximate 1-month history of progressive weight loss, anorexia and lethargy that abruptly worsened 48 h before death. Post-mortem examination revealed free flocculent fluid and a large mass within the ventral abdomen that dorsally displaced the caecum and large intestine. An ovarian teratocarcinoma with metastasis to regional lymph nodes was diagnosed histologically. Although benign teratomas are the second most common ovarian neoplasm in equids, reports of malignant teratomas in horses are rare. This report documents an unusual presentation of a rarely reported malignant neoplasm of the reproductive tract in horses.

A study performed an autopsy on a sick three-year-old Quarter Horse mare and found a rare malignant tumor called an ovarian teratocarcinoma, signifying an unusual occurrence of this type of reproductive tract cancer in horses.
Background and Presentation
- The subject of the article is a three-year-old Quarter Horse mare, which had been suffering from symptoms including weight loss, loss of appetite and tiredness for about a month.
- The horse’s condition deteriorated significantly and fatally two days before its death.
- Upon death, the researchers performed a post-mortem examination to understand the cause.
Post-mortem Examination Findings
- During the autopsy, the researchers found an accumulation of unclear fluid and an unusually large mass in the horse’s lower abdomen.
- They observed that this mass was pressing upwards against the cecum (a pouch within the intestine) and the large intestine, initiating a displacement.
Diagnosis
- Microscopic examination of the mass identified it as a type of cancer called an ovarian teratocarcinoma, which had further spread to the regional lymph nodes.
- Teratomas of a benign nature are the second most frequent kind of ovarian tumor in equids (a family including horses and zebras), but malignant versions like ovarian teratocarcinomas are seldom reported in horses.
- As such, the diagnosis highlighted an uncommon instance of this kind of malignant cancer in this animal.
Study Significance
- The importance of this case lies in its rarity. Malignant ovarian neoplasms, specifically teratocarcinomas, have seldom been documented in horses.
- This case study thus provides significant insights into an unusual and rare manifestation of a malignant neoplasm affecting the reproductive tract in horses.
