Methicillin resistant staphylococci and broad-spectrum β-lactamase producing Enterobacteriaceae in horses.

Abstract: The use of β-lactam antibiotics results in the selection of bacteria showing resistance toward this class of antibiotics. The review focuses on the increasing importance of methicillin resistant staphylococci and broad-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae in horses. Diagnostic protocols that optimize accurate identification of these bacteria from both clinical samples and samples obtained from putative carrier animals are described. In addition, the opportunities and pitfalls for preventive and curative measures are discussed.

The research looks into the emergence of bacteria in horses that have developed resistance to β-lactam antibiotics, with particular focus on methicillin-resistant staphylococci and broad-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae. It provides guidelines in identifying these bacteria for prevention and treatment options.

Antibiotic Resistance in Bacteria

  • The study attributes the growth of antibiotic resistant bacteria in horses to the usage of β-lactam antibiotics. These include a class of antibiotics that have a similar mode of action and share a common element of structure. Overuse or misuse of these antibiotics can select bacteria that show resistance.
  • The emphasis is mainly on two types of bacteria: methicillin-resistant staphylococci, which are a hard-to-treat type of staph bacteria due to their resistance to a variety of strong antibiotics; and broad-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae, a family of germs that have developed resistance to β-lactam antibiotics through production of an enzyme β-lactamase.

Diagnostic Protocols

  • The research proposes diagnostic protocols for the most effective detection of these dangerous bacteria. These protocols are beneficial in the accurate identification of such bacteria from both clinical samples (such as blood, urine, wound swabs, etc.) and samples taken from potential carrier animals. Carrier animals are those that house these bacteria but do not show signs of infection themselves. Such carriers can transmit the resistant strains to other animals or humans, posing a significant threat to public health.

Prevention and Treatment

  • The review discusses available opportunities and challenges in the prevention and treatment of infections caused by these bacteria. This is of crucial significance given the antibiotic resistant nature of the methicillin resistant staphylococci and broad-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae.
  • It also highlights potential challenges faced in the treatment, including occurrence of treatment failure due to resistance, potential side effects of alternative antibiotics, and the cost of the treatment.
