Miscellaneous conditions of the equine foot.
Abstract: The etiology, clinical presentation, radiographic findings, diagnostic criteria, differential diagnoses, treatment, and prognosis are reviewed for several clinically important conditions of the equine foot. These include pedal osteitis, sheared heels, distal sesamoid bone (navicular) fractures, subchondral bone cyst of the distal phalanx, distal interphalangeal joint subluxation, congenital phalangeal hypoplasia, bipartite and tripartite distal sesamoid bones, keratoma, ossification of the cartilages of the distal phalanx (sidebones), necrosis of the cartilages of the distal phalanx (quittor), thrush, canker, vesicular stomatitis, and chronic selenium toxicosis.

The research article provides in-depth knowledge about various conditions that can affect the foot of a horse. These include everything from pedal osteitis to chronic selenium toxicosis, with relevant details on causes, symptoms, diagnostic criteria, treatments, and prognosis.
Etiology and Clinical Presentation
- The paper begins by discussing the causes and symptoms of several conditions affecting the foot of a horse, like pedal osteitis, sheared heels, fractures of the navicular bone, and others. It elaborates on what causes these conditions, how they present clinically, and how they are diagnosed.
Radiographic Findings and Diagnostic Criteria
- Further, the article delves into radiographic findings that are used to diagnose these disorders. The specific diagnostic criteria for each of these conditions are explained comprehensively.
Differential Diagnoses, Treatment, and Prognosis
- In addition, the paper discusses how to differentiate between these conditions based on the symptoms and diagnostic results. It also details the treatment options available for each condition and what the prognosis generally looks like.
Congenital Conditions and Other Issues
- Also, it pays special attention to congenital issues like phalangeal hypoplasia and complications related to the distal sesamoid bones. Conditions like keratoma, ossification of the cartilages of the distal phalanx, and necrosis of the cartilages of the distal phalanx are also examined closely.
Common Diseases and Toxicosis
- Common diseases of the equine foot such as thrush, canker, and vesicular stomatitis are equally addressed. Lastly, it mentions the impact of chronic selenium toxicosis on the equine foot.
In conclusion, this research is essential for veterinary practitioners who deal with equine health as well as equine caretakers. It provides a thorough review of the various conditions that can affect the horse’s foot and provide a valuable guide for diagnosis, treatment, and management.
