Morphometric data on the accessory ligament of the deep digital flexor tendon in the equine hindlimb.
Abstract: Desmopathy of the accessory ligament of the deep digital flexor tendon (ALDDFT) in the hindlimb has recently been described as a cause of lameness in horses. However, there is limited morphometric data on this ligament. In the present study, the ALDDFT was carefully dissected in 165 hindlimbs that were collected from an abattoir. Length, width (lateral-to-medial) and thickness (plantar-to-dorsal) of the ligament were measured. It was found that the ALDDFT may be absent in a minority of horses, but when it was present the general morphology was variable. The ALDDFT can be a single rectilinear structure ranging from slender or poorly developed to quite large and can be divided, in part or in its entirety, into two or three bundles.

The research article discusses a study conducted to gather detailed measurements and information about the accessory ligament of the deep digital flexor tendon (ALDDFT) in horse hindlimbs, a topic about which there was limited data and which has been identified as a potential cause of lameness.
Background and Objective
- The authors initiated the research due to the recently identified role of the accessory ligament of the deep digital flexor tendon (ALDDFT) in horse lameness. Insufficient morphometric data about this ligament impeded a deep understanding and effective treatment of the condition.
Methods
- The study was conducted by dissecting the ALDDFT in 165 horse hindlimbs sourced from an abattoir. This offered a large sample size and hence, credible aggregate data.
- Key measurements taken included the length, width (from lateral-to-medial), and thickness (from plantar-to-dorsal) of the ligament.
Findings
- The study found that the ALDDFT can be absent in some horses, but was generally present, albeit in variable morphology.
- The ALDDFT was shown to sometimes be a singular rectilinear structure that ranged in appearance from slender or poorly developed to quite large. In other scenarios, the ligament could be divided, wholly or partially, into two or three bundles.
Implication of the Study
- This study provides critical data about the ALDDFT in horse hindlimbs, offering a platform for further research on conditions related to it, like equine lameness.
- The obtained information can aid the development of therapies or preventive measures aimed at addressing related lameness in horses.
