Multiple aneurysmal bone cysts in a foal.

This study highlights a previously unreported instance of multiple aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) in a Thoroughbred foal, with a second ABC developing postoperatively leading to euthanasia of the young horse.

Introduction to the research

• The study investigates a case of multiple aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) in a foal, which was previously unreported in horses.
• An aneurysmal bone cyst is an aggressive, non-neoplastic, expansile osteolytic lesion of the bone, predominantly affecting children and young adults. However, the occurrence of it in animals, especially in horses, is relatively unstudied. This case study on a Thoroughbred foal is therefore noteworthy.

• The first ABC was diagnosed in the left 3rd metacarpal of a young Thoroughbred foal.
• Following surgical curettage, a procedure intended to remove tissue by scraping or scooping, this cyst partially resolved.

• Due to the foal’s deteriorating health and the severity of the condition, the horse had to be euthanized. Euthanasia in such cases is often the last resort when the pain or quality of life cannot be managed adequately.
