[Neurological disorders caused by equine herpesvirus type 1 and cauda equina neuritis in horses].
Abstract: The differences in aetiology, symptomatology, pathomorphology, diagnosis and therapy between the nervous form (paralytic form) of Equine Herpes Virus, type 1, and Neuritis Caudae Equinae are reviewed. The conclusion is that in most cases it is possible to differentiate between these two clinical syndromes.

The research paper is about a comparative study of the disease symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of the neurological form of Equine Herpes Virus (type 1) and Neuritis Caudae Equinae in horses. These two neurological disorders in horses show different etiology and pathomorphology, and can generally be differentiated.
Research Overview
- This study undertakes a critical analysis of two neurological disorders in horses – the paralytic form of Equine Herpes Virus type 1 (EHV-1), and Neuritis Caudae Equinae. The research revolves around the differences in their etiology (causes), symptomatology (symptoms), pathomorphology (study of changes in tissues caused by disease), diagnosis, and therapy.
Main Findings
- One of the primary findings of this study is the difference in the etiology of the two conditions. While EHV-1 is a viral disorder, Neuritis Caudae Equinae is an inflammation of the nerves at the lower end of the spinal cord in horses.
- Both conditions display diverse symptoms and pathomorphology, providing ample grounds for their distinction. EHV-1 presents with paralysis, while Neuritis Caudae Equinae presents with inflammation and pain.
- The modalities for diagnosis and therapy also differ for both conditions, facilitating a more straightforward differentiation.
Conclusion
- The study concludes that, in most cases, it is possible to differentiate between EHV-1 and Neuritis Caudae Equinae. As the conditions have different causes, symptoms, tissue changes, diagnosis methods, and treatment, they can typically be accurately identified and treated separately.
