[New drugs for horses and production animals in 2010].

Abstract: In 2010, three new active pharmaceutical ingredients were released on the German market for horses and food-producing animals. These were gamithromycin (Zactran®), a new macrolide antibiotic, Monepantel (Zolvix®), a broad spectrum anthelmintic with a novel mechanism, and Pergolide (Prascend®), the first dopamine receptor agonist for animals. Two substances have been approved for additional species. The tetracycline antibiotic doxycycline is now also authorized for turkeys and the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug firocoxib from the group of cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors is now available for horses. Furthermore, four new preparations with an interesting new pharmaceutical form, one drug with a new formulation and two drugs, which are interesting because of other criteria, were added to the market for horses and food producing animals.

The research article discusses the introduction of three new pharmaceutical ingredients for horses and food-producing animals in the German market in 2010. These new active ingredients expand the range of options available for treating these animals and include a new antibiotic, an anthelmintic with a unique mode of action, and the first-ever dopamine receptor agonist for animals.

Introduction of New Drugs

  • The research highlights three new active pharmaceutical ingredients that were introduced for horses and food-producing animals in the German market. These include Gamithromycin, Monepantel, and Pergolide.
  • Gamithromycin (Zactran®) is introduced as a new macrolide antibiotic. Macrolide antibiotics are used as they can prevent bacterial growth by inhibiting protein synthesis. It’s important to have a new antibiotic in the market for animals as bacteria can develop resistance to existing ones.
  • Monepantel (Zolvix®) is a new broad spectrum anthelmintic (anti-parasitic drug) with a unique mechanism. Anthelmintics are essential in animal treatment as they help in the expulsion or destruction of parasitic worms.
  • Pergolide (Prascend®) is the first-in-class dopamine receptor agonist for animals. Dopamine receptor agonists play a significant role in the management of diseases in animals. The introduction of Pergolide represents a milestone in veterinary medicine.

Approval of Substances for Additional Species

  • In addition to the new drugs, two substances have received approval for use in additional species.
  • The research mentions that the tetracycline antibiotic doxycycline is now authorized for use in turkeys. Tetracycline antibiotics are widely used in veterinary medicine for their broad-spectrum efficacy against bacterial infections.
  • The nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) firocoxib, which belongs to the cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors group, is now available for horses. NSAIDs are the most commonly used drugs to manage pain and inflammation in horses.

New Additions to the Market

  • The report also reveals the addition of four new preparations with an interesting new pharmaceutical form to the market for horses and food-producing animals.
  • There’s a mention of one drug with a new formulation and two drugs of interest because of other criteria, but the research article doesn’t provide further details on these points.
