[New drugs for horses and production animals in 2011].
Abstract: In 2011, three newly developed active pharmaceutical ingredients for horses and food producing animals were released on the German market for veterinary drug products. Two of these new products represent different drug classes of antibiotics, the polypeptide antibiotic Bacitracin (Bacivet™) and the macrolide antibiotic Clorsulon (Levatum®). The third product represents an anticestodal antiparasitic (Tildipirosin, Zuprevo®). Furthermore, three established veterinary active pharmaceutical ingredients were modified to allow their application for additional species. Thus the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug sodium salicylate is now additionally authorised for turkeys and both the macrolide antibiotic Tilmicosin and the anticoccidial drug Toltrazuril are currently available for sheep. Additionally, two veterinary drugs with a new formulation as well as a veterinary drug for horses and food producing animals with a resourceful new combination of active pharmaceutical ingredients have recently been released.

The research discusses the introduction of three new veterinary pharmaceutical ingredients in 2011 for horses and food-producing animals in Germany. These drugs include two new antibiotic classes, polypeptide Bacitracin and macrolide Clorsulon, along with an anti-parasitic agent Tildipirosin. Additionally, modifications were made to make established drugs suitable for new species.
New Veterinary Drugs
- In the German market for veterinary pharmaceuticals, three new active drug ingredients were introduced in 2011. These drugs were developed for horses and food-producing animals.
- The new substances include Bacitracin (Bacivet™), a polypeptide antibiotic, and Clorsulon (Levatum®), a macrolide antibiotic. Both of these are classes of antibiotics used to control bacterial infections in animals.
- The third new drug is Tildipirosin (Zuprevo®), an anticestodal antiparasitic. This class of drugs is used in animals to treat parasitic worm (Cestodes) infections, improving the health and productivity of the animals.
Modifications to Established Veterinary Drugs
- In addition to the new drugs, modifications were made to three established veterinary drugs. These changes paved the way for their use in other animal species.
- Sodium salicylate, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), was expanded to include use in turkeys. This can be used to alleviate pain, inflammation, and fever in these birds.
- Two other drugs, the macrolide antibiotic Tilmicosin and the anticoccidial drug Toltrazuril, have been made available for sheep. Macrolide antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections, while anticoccidials are used to control Eimeria parasites causing coccidiosis, a disease that can cause severe intestinal damage in sheep.
New Formulations and Combinations
- The research also highlights the introduction of two existing veterinary drugs in new formulations, although specific information about these products is not provided.
- Additionally, one product is mentioned that combines multiple active pharmaceutical ingredients into a single drug for horses and food-producing animals, offering a potentially more efficient or effective treatment solution. Again, specific details are not given about this product within the provided abstract.
