[New drugs for horses and production animals in 2014].

Abstract: In 2014, no new active pharmaceutical ingredients were released on the German market for horses and food producing animals. One established veterinary active pharmaceutical ingredient is avaibable for an additional species. The analgetic buprenorphine (Buprenodale® Multidose) has additionally been authorized for horses. Furthermore, four new preparations with a new pharmaceutical form, one drug with a new formulation, new galenics and a new indication, respectively, have recently been released to the market. Furthermore, the prostaglandin F2α analoque luprostiol is available again.

The research article discusses the pharmaceutical developments in 2014 for horses and food producing animals in Germany. It notes that while there were no entirely new drugs introduced, some established drugs had expanded uses and new forms of existing drugs were introduced.

Pharmaceutical Developments

The article outlines a few specific developments which occurred in the pharmaceutical industry for horses and food producing animals:

  • While there were no new active pharmaceutical ingredients introduced to the German market, existing drugs found expanded uses. Specifically, the analgesic buprenorphine (known commercially as Buprenodale® Multidose) was officially authorized for use in horses.
  • Four new preparations featuring a new pharmaceutical form were released onto the market. These aren’t entirely new drugs, but rather novel ways to administer or formulate existing active pharmaceutical ingredients.
  • Along similar lines, one drug with a new formulation was introduced, which can represent an improved way to deliver the active ingredient or possibly offer a new therapeutic effect.
  • A drug received approval for a new indication, meaning it can now be officially prescribed to treat a different illness or condition than before.
  • Finally, the prostaglandin F2α analogue luprostiol became available again on the market. Luprostiol is a drug used in veterinary medicine to treat certain reproductive disorders in animals.

Significance of the Study

This article provides an overview of the 2014 pharmaceutical advancements for horses and food producing animals within Germany. Despite no new active pharmaceutical ingredients being introduced, the industry experienced progress through expanded uses of existing drugs and innovative formulations of pharmaceutical products. These advancements may present potential for improved animal health outcomes.
