[New drugs for horses and production animals in 2019].

The research presents the new pharmaceutical products available on the German market for horses and food-producing animals in 2019. Among the innovations are an injection for horses containing stem cells, added uses for two existing drugs, and some modifications to existing medications.

New Injection for Horses

• The fresh addition to the market is an injection suspension for horses named ArtiCell Forte. It’s composed of chondrogenic-induced equine allogeneic peripheral blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells. Meant to promote healing, this innovative solution leverages the power of stem cells – versatile cells capable of differentiation into many other types of cells.

Expanded Usage of Existing Drugs

• Two well-established veterinary drugs are now available for new species. Specifically, the anthelmintic oxyclozanide, formerly used to deal with parasitic worms in cattle, has received authorization for treating fascioliasis (liver fluke disease) in sheep.
• In the second case, a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide called permethrin has been authorized for use in donkeys. Previously, this substance was used only to control pests in a variety of settings, including pets.

Updated Formulations and Applications

• The research also notes the arrival of several drugs with either new combinations of active ingredients or reformulations. Notably, there’s a new compound combining toltrazuril, an antiprotozoal agent, and gleptoferron, an iron formulation. These two agents are used for prevention of coccidiosis, a parasitic disease in pigs, and for the prevention of iron deficiency in piglets, respectively.
• Two medications, permethrin and omeprazole, a substance used for reducing stomach acid in humans and animals, have been released in new pharmaceutical forms.
• The local anesthetic lidocaine is now available in a new route of administration. Additionally, amprolium, a thiamine (Vitamin B1) analogue that fights coccidiosis, is now offered with a higher content of active compound.
• Lastly, butylscopolaminium bromide is now available as a mono-preparation. Known for its antispasmodic properties, this medication relieves pain and discomfort caused by cramps in the gut.
