Nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism in two ponies.
Abstract: Nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism (NSH) is uncommon in horses. Aim of this report is evaluate an alternative therapeutic approach and provide more information on the diagnostic procedures, through detailed microscopic findings of the bone lesions pony with NSH. Administration of tiludronate along with a balanced diet can be used in a treatment protocol for ponies with NSH. This case report suggests that tiludronate can be used to ameliorate the clinical signs of NSH.

The study discusses the diagnosis, microscopic findings, and an alternate therapeutic approach for nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism (NSH) in ponies, suggesting the use of tiludronate with a balanced diet for treatment.
Understanding Nutritional Secondary Hyperparathyroidism
- Nutritional Secondary Hyperparathyroidism (NSH) is a rare condition in horses which affects the bones and is typically linked to a deficiency or imbalance of calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D in the diet.
Objective of the Study
- The aim of this study was primarily to broaden the understanding of diagnostic procedures and microscopic evaluation in ponies suffering from NSH.
- It also aimed to evaluate an alternative therapeutic approach for the condition.
Methodology
- The research analyzed detailed microscopic findings of bone lesions from a pony diagnosed with NSH.
- The researchers assessed the therapeutic effects of a drug called tiludronate in combination with a balanced diet on the pony’s health.
Findings and Conclusion
- The research suggests that tiludronate, along with maintaining a balanced diet, can potentially be used in a treatment protocol for ponies with NSH.
- This implies that tiludronate may serve to alleviate the clinical symptoms of NSH, offering a viable alternative treatment for the condition.
