Overview of the industry and social impacts of the 2007 Australian equine influenza outbreak.
Abstract: The equine influenza (EI) outbreak occurred at the worst time of the year as far as the horse industry was concerned. All horse sports and horse breeds had events planned in the spring, including those relating to qualification for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. These were all disrupted and many were cancelled. The social and industry impacts were extensive, and included difficulties related to communication, animal welfare, vaccination, movement restrictions, economics, as well as the psychological stresses experienced by those involved, especially those for whom their primary source of income was horse related.

The research article explores the significant industry and societal implications of the 2007 Australian equine influenza outbreak.
Context of the Equine Influenza Outbreak
- The research paper examines the 2007 outbreak of equine influenza in Australia, which afflicted the horse industry at its peak period. This unfortunate timing meant that numerous events across different horse sports and breeds were affected. Some of these events were important qualifications for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, and they were either disrupted or cancelled.
Industry Implications of the Outbreak
- The researchers highlight the extensive impacts the outbreak had on the horse industry. These impacts were not only immediate and tangible, such as the disruption of planned events, but also had ongoing effects. Greatly impeded communication led to widespread confusion and anxiety within the industry, and the economic implications were substantial, with many in the industry experiencing financial hardship without their primary source of income.
- The movement restrictions put in place to contain the virus posed another set of challenges. Quarantine measures limited the movement of horses and this affected various aspects of the industry, from the competition events to the breeding process.
Evaluation of Health Response
- Another key focus of the study is the response concerning the health of the horses, particularly the vaccination process. The paper investigates how efficiently the vaccination process was carried out and the difficulties encountered during this period.
Social Impacts of the Outbreak
- Lastly, the paper explored the psychological and emotional toll that the outbreak had on those involved, especially individuals whose primary occupation revolved around horses. These stresses were heightened by the lack of clear communication and the economic difficulties they faced.
- The animal welfare aspect is also considered, with the movement restrictions and potential stigma attached to infected horses highlighting the potential for questionably ethical interactions with these animals during times of crisis.
