Owner survey of tarsocrural effusion (bog spavin) in Clydesdale horses.
Abstract: A postal survey of the owners of Clydesdale horses in the UK and USA was conducted to obtain information on tarsocrural effusion ('bog spavin') as an indicator of osteochondrosis from 935 horses. Additional information requested included details of how this condition was investigated and treated. The reported tarsocrural effusion incidence was 10 per cent. The majority of respondents believed the condition to be of concern to Clydesdale owners, but only a minority were aware of the implications of tarsocrural effusion, suggesting that owner education would be of benefit.

This research article explains the study of tarsocrural effusion, also known as ‘bog spavin,’ in Clydesdale horses conducted via a survey. The study aimed to understand the prevalence and treatment understanding among horse owners.
Research Overview
- The research was conducted via a postal survey sent to the owners of Clydesdale horses located in the UK and USA. A total of 935 horse owners were involved in the survey.
- Tarsocrural effusion, commonly known as ‘bog spavin,’ was the primary condition under study. This is a condition where there is swelling in the horse’s hock joint, often indicative of osteochondrosis, an interruption of the blood supply that leads to the formation of bone and cartilage.
- Along with the prevalence of the said condition, the survey also sought to understand how the horse owners investigated and treated this condition, thus providing a perspective on the treatments most commonly adapted by horse owners.
Key Findings
- The survey findings indicated that the incidence of tarsocrural effusion in Clydesdale horses was around 10%, implying that one in every ten horses of this breed might have had this condition.
- A notable point was that the majority of the respondents recognised the bog spavin condition as a point of concern for Clydesdale horse owners, indicating an overall awareness about the health issues that Clydesdale horses often deal with.
- However, it should be noted that only a minority were aware of the implications of tarsocrural effusion, indicating that most owners didn’t fully understand the health complications that their horses could face due to bog spavin.
Recommendations
- The study concludes by suggesting the need for enhanced owner education regarding tarsocrural effusion and its potential implications. The researchers argue that better awareness among horse owners could lead to early detection, prompt and appropriate treatments, thus improving the health outcomes for Clydesdale horses.
