Pulmonary artery wedge pressure measurement in healthy warmblood horses and in warmblood horses with mitral valve insufficiencies of various degrees during standardised treadmill exercise.

Abstract: In 12 healthy warmblood horses and 10 horses with mitral valve insufficiencies (MVI) of various degrees heart rate and pulmonary artery wedge pressure (PWP) was measured at rest and during standardised exercise on a high speed treadmill. There was a significant increase in PWP with each change in speed of the treadmill (p < 0.01). The PWP of horses with mild mitral valve regurgitation under working conditions was not significantly different compared to the healthy horses. The horses with moderate mitral valve regurgitation showed a significant higher pulmonary artery wedge pressure at rest and during exercise compared to the healthy horses (p < 0.01) at rest and during treadmill velocity. The tendencies were seen that mild mitral valve regurgitation results only in mild hemodynamic changes during exercise, while moderate MVI have an important influence on haemodynamics.

This study investigates the heart rate and pulmonary artery wedge pressure (PWP) of healthy horses and horses with various degrees of mitral valve insufficiencies (MVI) during standardised treadmill exercise. Findings show a significant increase in PWP in response to exercise, with horses having moderate MVI exhibiting higher PWP at rest and during exercise compared to healthy horses.

About the Research

  • The study included 12 healthy warmblood horses and 10 horses with varying degrees of Mitral Valve Insufficiencies (MVI).
  • The researchers conducted a test on a high-speed treadmill, measuring heart rate and Pulmonary Artery Wedge Pressure (PWP) both at rest and during standardized exercise.
  • Pulmonary Artery Wedge Pressure (PWP) is generally used to assess the left side of the heart. Its measurement can provide valuable information about the condition of the heart, specifically regarding potential problems with the heart’s valves such as MVI.

Key Findings

  • The results showed a significant increase in PWP in response to changes in the speed of the treadmill. This indicates that the act of exercising on the treadmill did indeed put a certain amount of strain on the cardiovascular system of the horses.
  • Importantly, no significant difference was found in PWP between healthy horses and those with mild cases of MVI, suggesting that mild MVI may not have a noticeable effect on a horse’s cardiovascular performance during exercise.
  • However, horses with moderate cases of MVI displayed significantly higher PWP at rest, and during exercise compared to the healthy horses. This suggests that moderate MVI can have considerable impact on a horse’s cardiovascular function, which in turn could potentially influence the horse’s overall health, performance, or both.

Implications of the Study

  • The findings of this study can be useful in diagnosing and managing equine heart disease, particularly in relation to mitral valve insufficiency. By measuring PWP during exercise, practitioners can gain better insight into how the horse’s heart is functioning under stress.
  • The differences in PWP between healthy horses and those with varying degrees of MVI could help veterinarians assess the severity of the condition and devise appropriate treatment plans.
  • In the broader perspective, this study also emphasizes the importance of thorough and regular cardiovascular health checks for horses, as it shows that even moderate MVI can significantly impact the horse’s cardiovascular performance.
