Serosurvey of anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in sport horses from Paraiba state, Northeastern Brazil.

Abstract: Although the infection by Toxoplasma gondii in horses is usually asymptomatic, it may be characterized by the presence of tissue cysts and maintenance of detectable antibody titers. The aim of this study was to detect anti-T.gondii antibodies and to determine risk factors associated in sport horses from Paraíba State, Northeastern Brazil. A total of 138 apparently healthy sport horses of different age and gender were sampled. Anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies were detected in 16/138 (11.6%; 95% CI: 6.77-18.14%) horses by indirect immunofluorescence antibody assay (IFA). A significant association was found between the water source and seropositivity to T. gondii (p<0.05). The present study highlights the importance of providing good quality water to the animals.

The research investigated the presence of antibodies to a parasite known as Toxoplasma gondii in sport horses in Paraíba State, Northeastern Brazil, and found an association between the quality of water these horses consumed and their infection rates.

Study Overview

This study primarily focussed on detecting anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in sport horses. Toxoplasma gondii is a microscopic parasite that can cause diseases when ingested or inhaled by animals and humans. While infection from this parasite is generally asymptomatic in horses, it can form tissue cysts and influence detectable antibody levels. The researchers also sought to establish any risk factors associated with the presence of these antibodies in horses.

  • 138 sport horses of different ages and genders, which appeared healthy, were selected for this study.
  • The researchers screened the horses for anti-T. gondii antibodies using an indirect immunofluorescence antibody assay (IFA).

Results of the Study

The researchers identified anti-T. gondii antibodies in 16 out of 138 horses, which is an 11.6% prevalence rate. They used statistical analysis to ascertain the significance of this figure and provided a 95% confidence interval of 6.77-18.14%.

  • In addition to screening for antibodies, the study identified a significant association between the water source for horses and seropositivity to T. gondii. This association was statistically significant (p<0.05), implying that the data did not occur by chance.

Conclusion of the Study

From their findings, the researchers extracted the relevance and need for providing good quality water to horses to limit potential exposure and infection from T. gondii. They concluded that reducing exposure to contaminated water could be a practical step in reducing T. gondii infections in sport horses in Paraíba State, Northeastern Brazil.
