Skin grafts and skin flaps in the horse.
Abstract: Although most equine wounds can be easily treated and heal without consequence, there are many that present special challenges. Skin grafts area valuable part of the veterinarian's armamentarium for treatment of complicated wounds, particularly limb wounds. Attention to preparation of the recipient site and proper aftercare are critical to successful grafting. With better understanding of equine wound and graft physiology and the promise foretold by advances in human skin grafting, the outcome of treatments of difficult equine wounds should continue to improve in the future.

This research article looks at the use of skin grafts to treat complicated wounds in horses. The success of these methods largely depends on the preparation of the recipient site and the aftercare, and advancements in human skin grafting could potentially further improve these treatments.
Challenges in Wound Healing in Equines
- Many wounds in horses can be treated and healed without serious implications. However, a significant number of these injuries pose unique challenges.
- The article delves into this complex subject, focusing on wounds, particularly limb wounds, that warrant the application of skin grafts for proper healing.
The Value of Skin Grafts
- Skin grafts serve as an essential, power-packed tool in the veterinarian’s arsenal for treating these complicated equine wounds.
- A skin graft involves transplanting skin from an area of the body unaffected by disease or injury to the wound site.
- This procedure is particularly beneficial in healing extensive wounds and injuries that may not heal properly or timely through natural processes.
The Importance of Site Preparation and Aftercare
- The success of skin grafting in horses is largely contingent upon effective preparation of the recipient site and the post-operative care of the wound.
- Properly preparing the wound site helps ensure the graft takes and begins to heal.
- Appropriate post-operative care is crucial to prevent any complications, including infections, which may have deleterious effects on the graft.
Future Outlook
- The article predicts that with an improved understanding of equine ailment, wound and graft physiology and as advancements continue in human skin grafting techniques, the prognosis for treating challenging equine wounds is expected to improve in the future.
- The continual evolution in human skin grafting techniques, such as using stem cells, tissue-engineered skin or living skin equivalents, could potentially be transferred to equine practice, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of skin grafts for horses.
