Small intestine strangulation by components of the spermatic cord in two geldings.

Abstract: Two adult Quarter Horse geldings were evaluated for signs of abdominal pain. Both horses had signs of depression and distended small intestines on abdominal palpation per rectum. Abdominal exploratory surgery was performed on both horses. In each instance, small intestine was found to be strangulated by components of the spermatic cord. Both horses were euthanatized because of a poor prognosis. Although not commonly observed, incarceration of intestine by components of the spermatic cord should be considered as a cause of small intestine strangulation in male horses. Early recognition of this condition would have increased these horses' chances of survival.

The research article is about two adult Quarter Horse geldings that were examined due to signs of abdominal pain, found to have a rare condition where the small intestine gets entangled by the spermatic cord, leading to strangulation of the intestine. Despite surgical intervention, their prognosis was poor, leading to euthanization.

Introduction and Objective

  • The research paper presents and elaborates on a case study of two adult Quarter Horse geldings. These horses showed signs of abdominal pain, and subsequent examinations spotted unusual findings.

Findings

  • Initial observations showed that both horses exhibited signs of depression and had distended small intestines upon abdominal palpation per rectum.
  • This situation led to an abdominal exploratory surgery being performed on both horses to ascertain the problem’s root cause. It allowed the researchers to examine the abdominal cavity in depth and led to a surprising discovery.
  • During the surgical exploration, it was found that their small intestines were strangulated or constricted by parts of the spermatic cord, a structure normally associated with the male reproductive system. This situation termed ‘incarceration,’ is unusual and not commonly observed in horses.

Outcomes and Recommendations

  • Despite carrying out surgery to correct this unexpected incarceration, both horses were euthanized. This decision was taken due to the poor prognosis, implying that their chances of recovering or surviving were quite low.
  • The paper concludes by acknowledging that this strangulation of the small intestine by components of the spermatic cord, though not commonly noticed, should be considered as a potential cause of small intestine strangulation in male horses.
  • The researchers believe that had this condition been recognized earlier, the horses would have had a greater chance of survival. This grave outcome underscores the importance of early detection and immediate intervention when dealing with such unusual conditions in horses.
