Specialized veins in the submucosa of the equine ileocecal junction.
Abstract: Spirally arranged bundles of sub-endothelial smooth muscle enfold the small to medium-sized submucosal veins in the equine ileocecal junction. The muscle bundles, accompanied by the endothelial lining, bulge into the lumen of the vessels, partly occluding the latter. Transmission electron microscopy of the muscle cells reveals features consistent with vascular smooth muscle ultrastructure. It is proposed that the throttling effect of the muscle bundles causes engorgement of the submucosal venous plexus, which then assists in the closing of the ileocecal orifice.

The research article investigates specialized structures found in the veins of the horse’s ileocecal junction, a part of the digestive system. These structures, composed of spirally arranged bundles of sub-endothelial smooth muscle, potentially play a critical role in regulating blood flow and assisting in the function of the ileocecal orifice.
Configuration of the Specialized Veins
- The researchers found that the small to medium-sized submucosal veins in the equine ileocecal junction are enveloped by spirally arranged bundles of sub-endothelial smooth muscle.
- This arrangement causes these muscle bundles and the endothelial lining to bulge into the lumen, or the inside space of the vein, partially obstructing it.
Muscle’s Microstructure
- Further investigation using transmission electron microscopy, which allows viewing at the ultrastructural level, revealed that the muscle cells display features consistent with those of vascular smooth muscle.
- Vascular smooth muscle is the type of muscle found in the walls of blood vessels and are responsible for the contraction and expansion of blood vessels, therefore regulating blood flow.
Proposed Function of the Specialized Veins
- The researchers propose that the squeezing or throttling effect of the spirally arranged muscle bundles may cause the submucosal venous plexus – a network of veins – to become engorged or filled with blood.
- This blood engorgement, in turn, helps in closing the ileocecal orifice.
- The ileocecal orifice is the opening between the small intestine (ileum) and the first part of the large intestine (cecum). Its main function is to regulate the passage of digested food material from the ileum into the cecum.
- Thus, these specialized veins may play a crucial role in the proper functioning of the equine digestive system.
