Strategies for improving the welfare of working equids in the Americas: a Chilean example.
Abstract: In the past, the use of animals for transport and traction has been of economic importance all over the world, and this is still the case in certain areas of the world today, especially in rural and peri-urban areas of developing and transition countries. In Chile, for example, thousands of families rely on draught animal power as a fundamental source of income. This provides an opportunity to generate scientific information to increase understanding of the relationship between human well-being and that of domestic animals. Minimising the risks associated with poor draught animal welfare should be beneficial for this relationship. Given the important role of working equids as a source of wealth, in Chile and similar countries, different strategies have been implemented to address the health and welfare of these animals. For these strategies to be successful it is essential to establish appropriate government policies as well as to consider the cultural, political and geographical situation of the regions in which these equids work.

Role of Working Equids in Chile
- The article acknowledges the continued reliance on working equids in rural and peri-urban areas of developing and transitional countries. Notably in Chile, thousands of families use these animals as draught power to derive income. Therefore, understanding the interconnectedness of human and animal welfare becomes critical.
Impact of Poor Draught Animal Welfare
- Although working equids form an essential part of many people’s livelihoods, the associated risks due to poor draught animal welfare can mar this relationship. Hence, it becomes vital to minimize these risks which involves ensuring the animals’ wellbeing.
Addressing Health and Welfare of Working Equids
- The study discusses different strategies implemented to improve the health and welfare of working equids in countries like Chile. These strategies’ success lies in understanding and considering the regional cultural, political, and geographical situations. Moreover, it also addresses the need for appropriate government policies to safeguard the welfare of these animals.
Importance of Governing Policies and Regional Understanding
- For strategies aimed at improving the welfare of working equids to work effectively, it’s vital to establish fitting government policies. Additionally, recognizing the unique cultural, political, and geographical circumstances of the regions these animals operate in, such as Chile, is instrumental towards the success of these strategies.
