Surgical repair of ruptured trachea in a horse.
Abstract: An Arabian mare was referred with traumatically induced complete transection of the trachea. A temporary airway was established through the open wound at the site of the rupture. Resection of devitalized tissue including 3 tracheal ring segments, and anastomosis of the tracheal ends was subsequently performed under general anesthesia. Wound healing was complicated by a peritracheal abscess, which responded successfully to drainage and antibiotic administration.

The article discusses a successful surgical repair done on an Arabian mare with a completely transected trachea due to trauma. This was achieved via removal of damaged tissue, retraction of tracheal ends, and a subsequent wound healing which involved managing a peritracheal abscess with drainage and antibiotics.
Case Presentation and Treatment
- The Arabian mare presented was suffering from a complete transection of the trachea. This means the horse’s windpipe had been entirely severed due to trauma.
- A temporary airway was first established through the open wound at the site of the rupture. This was an immediate measure to ensure the horse could continue breathing despite the severe injury to its trachea.
Surgical Procedure
- After the temporary airway was established, the next step involved the resection of the devitalized (dead) tissue which included three tracheal ring segments. Resection refers to the surgical removal of some or all of an organ or tissue.
- The ends of the trachea were then reconnected via anastomosis. Anastomosis is a surgical procedure to create a connection between two parts that are usually separate. In this case, the two ends of the transected trachea were reconnected. This procedure was carried out under general anesthesia.
Postoperative Complications and Management
- The wound healing process after the operation was complicated by a peritracheal abscess. A peritracheal abscess is a localized infection filled with pus around the trachea. This complicates the healing process as it can lead to further damage to the surrounding tissue and potentially cause severe respiratory distress if not treated promptly.
- Successful treatment of the abscess was achieved through drainage to remove the pus and administration of antibiotics to counteract the infection. This approach helps to control the infection, reduce inflammation, and finally permit proper wound healing.
Conclusion
- This case presented a rare and complex surgical problem in veterinary medicine, involving the careful management of a complete transection of a horse’s trachea. Despite encountering postoperative complications, the treatment was ultimately successful, showcasing the possibilities for advanced surgical interventions in large animals.
