Suspected primary scapulohumeral osteoarthritis in two Miniature ponies.
Abstract: Two cases of severe scapulohumeral osteoarthritis in Miniature ponies are described, one bilateral and the other unilateral. The condition is thought to occur in miniature breeds as a result of scapulohumeral dysplasia. The presentation in one of the ponies was unusal: it refused to pick up either fore limb, with progression to a uniquely bizarre gait with narrow forelimb placement, an arched back and widely placed hindlimbs camped well forward under the body. The other pony was presented for an acute unilateral non-weight bearing forelimb lameness. Response to analgesia in both cases was poor and both ponies were euthanased. A pathological fracture was evident in one affected glenoid cavity.

This research article presents two cases of severe scapulohumeral osteoarthritis in Miniature ponies, likely caused by a condition known as scapulohumeral dysplasia, which commonly occurs in miniatures breeds. Despite attempts at analgesic treatment the ponies responded poorly and they were ultimately euthanised.
Scapulohumeral Osteoarthritis in Miniature Ponies
- The paper discusses two instances of severe scapulohumeral osteoarthritis in Miniature ponies, a condition that primarily affects their shoulder joints.
- The authors suggest that this disease is possibly due to a condition known as scapulohumeral dysplasia, a developmental disorder affecting the shoulder joint, which is seen predominantly in miniature breeds.
The Presented Cases
- One of the observed ponies exhibited unusual symptoms, such as an unwillingness to lift either of its forward limbs. Its walking pattern was also affected — it walked with narrow forelimb placement, an arched back, and widely placed hindlimbs advanced well forward under the body.
- The other pony had acute unilateral non-weight-bearing forelimb lameness. This meant it was experiencing severe pain in one of its forelimbs, to the extent that it refused to put weight on it.
Treatment and Outcome
- Both ponies did not respond well to analgesic treatment, which is typically used to reduce pain and inflammation.
- Due to their poor response to analgesia and the severity of their symptoms, the decision was made to euthanise both ponies.
- Upon further examination, one of the ponies was found to have a pathological fracture in one of its glenoid cavities located in the shoulder joint.
Implications
- This research highlights the potential for severe scapulohumeral osteoarthritis in miniature ponies, and the need for further research and improved treatment options in this area.
- It also shows the potential complexity of diagnosing and treating osteoarthritis in miniature ponies, especially considering the unusual symptoms presented in one of the cases.
