The Equine Neonatal Cardiovascular System in Health and Disease.

Abstract: The neonatal foal is in a transitional state from prenatal to postnatal circulation. Healthy newborn foals often have cardiac murmurs and dysrhythmias, which are usually transient and of little clinical significance. The neonatal foal is prone to infection and cardiac trauma. Echocardiography is the main tool used for valuation of the cardiovascular system. With prompt identification and appropriate action, dysrhythmias and other sequel to cardiac trauma can be corrected. With infection, the management and prognosis are driven by concurrent sepsis. Congenital disease represents an interesting diagnostic challenge for the neonatologist, but surgical correction is not appropriate for most equids.

This research discusses the fragile state of cardiovascular health in newborn horses (foals), emphasizing the prevalence of transient disorders and their management, as well as the difficulty of diagnosing congenital diseases.

Cardiovascular Health in Neonatal Foals

  • The study points out that the cardiovascular system of newborn foals is in a transitional state as it adapts from prenatal to postnatal circulation.
  • Even in healthy foals, this transition often entails cardiac murmurs and dysrhythmias that are typically short-lived and do not impose significant clinical implications.

Risks and Challenges

  • It is observed that neonatal foals are susceptible to infection and cardiac trauma.
  • These conditions must be promptly identified and properly managed to prevent dysrhythmias and other consequences.
  • In cases of infection, management strategies and prognosis heavily depend on the presence of concurrent sepsis.

Echocardiography as a Diagnostic Tool

  • The study underscores echocardiography as the primary tool for assessing the cardiovascular system in foals.
  • This technique is instrumental in the prompt detection and correction of potential disorders.

Congenital Diseases in Foals

  • Congenital diseases in neonatal foals pose a unique diagnostic challenge for the veterinary neonatologist.
  • Despite the complexity of diagnosis, the research suggests that surgical intervention is generally inappropriate for most equines with congenital diseases, indicating the need for alternative management strategies.
