The prevalence of intestinal Salmonella infection in horses submitted for necropsy.
Abstract: Specimens from the ileum, colon and rectum were aseptically collected from 50 consecutive horse carcases submitted for necropsy to the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Pretoria. These were bacteriologically examined for the presence of Salmonella. Seventeen of these were positive for Salmonella at one or more sites. Serotyping of the isolates revealed a dominance of Salmonella Hayindogo in these horses.

This paper investigates the rate of Salmonella infection in the digestive tracts of horses that were subjected to autopsy, revealing that 17 out of 50 horses tested positive for the disease.
Research Methodology
- The research was carried out at the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Pretoria, where specimens were collected from 50 horse carcasses that were sent in for autopsy.
- Specifically, samples were aseptically collected from three sections of each horse’s digestive tract: the ileum, colon, and rectum.
- The samples were then bacteriologically examined to detect the presence of Salmonella, a type of bacteria that can cause intestinal infections.
Research Findings
- Among the 50 horses examined, 17 were found to be infected with Salmonella bacteria in one or more of the analyzed digestive tract sites.
- The type of Salmonella found in these horses was identified by serotyping the isolated bacteria.
- Most commonly, the type of Salmonella identified was Salmonella Hayindogo, which was the dominant type of the bacteria in these horses.
Implications
- The findings of this study indicate that intestinal infections due to Salmonella bacteria could be a common health issue for horses.
- Given that a significant percentage of the horses tested were infected with Salmonella, often the Hayindogo strain, equine health practitioners should be aware of this issue and consider including Salmonella testing in routine health checks for horses.
- The reported prevalence of Salmonella Hayindogo suggests that horses could also possibly be a source of this specific strain of Salmonella, which has implications for human and other animal health if those horses come in contact with them, emphasizing the importance of good hygiene and infection control practices with horses.
