The use of lasers for treatment of upper respiratory tract disorders.
Abstract: Lasers have become important tools for the equine surgeon in the treatment of upper respiratory tract disease in the horse. Multiple wavelengths and delivery systems are available. Indications for the use of lasers in the upper respiratory tract primarily include minimally invasive procedures not possible with conventional surgical instrumentation. New applications for the use of lasers to treat upper respiratory disease are likely to evolve with the development and introduction of new wavelengths and delivery systems.

This research article discusses the growing use of lasers in equine surgery for the treatment of upper respiratory tract diseases in horses. It provides an overview of the various laser wavelengths and delivery systems available, as well as their specific applications in minimally invasive procedures.
Introduction
In this study, the authors provide a thorough overview of the application of lasers in the treatment of upper respiratory tract disorders in horses. The focus of exploration is on how the use of lasers has proven to be advantageous in performing minimally invasive procedures that would not have been possible with the use of traditional surgical instruments.
Different Laser Wavelengths and Delivery Systems
- The different types of laser wavelengths available and their specific uses for treating respiratory diseases are discussed. These diverse wavelengths allow for the tailor-fitting of surgical procedures to the unique needs of each patient.
- The authors also discuss the various delivery systems available, noting that the choice of system largely depends on the specific procedure being done and the location in the respiratory tract being treated.
Minimally Invasive Procedures
- The main advantage of using lasers is that they help perform minimally invasive procedures. Traditional surgical instruments may not be suitable in some cases where precision and a small footprint of operation are required.
- Lasers allow for greater precision compared to conventional surgical tools and are minimally invasive, thus reducing post-operative complications and recovery times for the horse.
Future of Laser Use in Equine Surgery
- The study also makes projections for the future of using lasers to treat respiratory diseases in horses. It suggests that as technology progresses and new wavelengths and delivery systems are developed, there will be an increase in the utilization of lasers in equine medicine.
- Moreover, the introduction of newer, more advanced delivery systems and laser technologies will likely evolve the current practice and open up more possibilities for the treatment of respiratory diseases in horses.
