Toxoplasma antibodies in polo horses of Nigeria.
Abstract: A serological survey of Toxoplasma antibodies was carried out amongst horses used for polo game in Nigeria using the indirect haemagglutination test (IHA). A total of 70 horses from Kaduna, Kano and Jos that were assembled in Zaria for the annual national tournament were sampled. 26 (37.1%) of these were seropositive to T. gondii with the highest serological titre at 1:256. Out of the 52 local breeds, 20 (38.5%) were seropositive while of the 18 Argentine breeds, 6 (33.0%) were seropositive. No significant difference was found amongst the breeds. With the increasing interest in the game of polo in Nigeria and with the findings that T. gondii could cause encephalomyelitis in horses, the need to take precautionary measures so that these horses don't get infection cannot be over emphasized.

The research paper focuses on a study conducted to detect the presence of Toxoplasma antibodies in polo horses in Nigeria, indicating exposure to T. gondii, a parasite that could cause encephalomyelitis in horses.
Study Design and Methodology
- The research is a serological survey aimed at detecting Toxoplasma antibodies in polo horses in Nigeria.
- The study utilized the indirect haemagglutination test (IHA), a clinical test usually employed to detect antibodies or antigens in the blood.
- The sample comprised a total of 70 horses that were brought to Zaria for the yearly national tournament. These horses came from three different locations: Kaduna, Kano, and Jos.
Study Findings and Analysis
- Out of 70 horses, 26 (37.1%) were found to be seropositive to T. gondii, which means these horses had been exposed to this parasite at some point in their lives.
- The highest serological titre observed during the study was 1:256, a measurement that refers to the highest dilution at which antibodies can still be detected in a sample. A higher titre can indicate a more recent or severe infection.
- When the researchers compared the local breeds (52 in total) and Argentine breeds (18 in total), they found that 20 (38.5%) of the local breeds and 6 (33.0%) of the Argentine breeds were seropositive.
- However, no substantial difference was observed among the breeds in terms of their exposure to T. gondii.
Implications and Recommendations
- The researchers underscored that their findings are critical considering that T. gondii can cause encephalomyelitis, an inflammatory condition affecting the brain and spinal cord in horses.
- Given the increasing interest in the polo game in Nigeria and the risk that T. gondii poses to the horses, the researchers recommend that precautionary measures are necessary to avoid these horses from getting infected.
