Treatment of granular cell tumor via complete right lung resection in a horse.
Abstract: A 7-year-old warmblood mare was referred because of a respiratory tract disorder; pulmonary granular cell tumor was diagnosed. Pulmonary granular cell tumor is a locally invasive but rare type of tumor with low metastatic potential. The entire right lung was resected to ensure removal of all neoplastic tissue. The horse recovered well and has minimal difficulties functioning with one lung. Most of these tumors are diagnosed during postmortem examination. To our knowledge, this is the first report of pulmonary granular cell tumor treated by complete lung resection in a horse.

This research article details the diagnosis and successful treatment of a rare pulmonary granular cell tumor in a horse, using the drastic measure of a complete right lung resection.
Condition Presentation and Treatment Method
- The article presents a case of a 7-year-old warmblood mare with a respiratory tract disorder. Upon evaluation, a rare pulmonary granular cell tumor was diagnosed.
- The chosen method of treatment was complete resection of the right lung. This is an invasive procedure that involves removing the entire lung to make sure all of the affected tissue is eliminated.
Type of Tumor
- The pulmonary granular cell tumor diagnosed in the horse is described as being locally invasive. This means it tends to aggressively infiltrate and damage the tissue in the area where it forms.
- Despite its invasive nature, the article reveals that this type of tumor has low metastatic potential. In other words, it is less likely to spread to other parts of the body.
Post-Surgical Results and Follow-up
- Following surgery, the horse recovered well, demonstrating that it could function effectively with only one lung.
- This case was deemed noteworthy as most pulmonary granular cell tumors are typically only diagnosed postmortem.
Significance of the Research
- This study is reported to be the first instance of a pulmonary granular cell tumor in a horse being treated by complete lung resection.
- This successful treatment and recovery underscores the potential value of this approach in managing similar cases in the future.
