[Ultrasonography of the formation and development of the corpus luteum in the mare: review for the practitioner].

Abstract: Because of the anatomical position of the Corpus luteum within the ovary, rectal palpation is of little value for identification and evaluation. The aim of this review is to familiarize the practitioner with the echographic examination of the Cl. He should be able to recognize different stages of this important structure and to correlate ovulation and the existence of the Cl. Various specific criteria and details regarding equine echography are reported and illustrated, using the the most recently published scientific data.

The study provides insight into the use of ultrasonography for examining and evaluating the growth and development of corpus luteum within the ovaries of a mare.

Overview of the Research

The research focuses on the ultrasonographic examination of the corpus luteum in horses (mares). The aim is to guide veterinarians or veterinary practitioners in properly identifying and evaluating the different stages of corpus luteum, a vital structure in the ovary related to ovulation in mares.

Corpus Luteum and Its Importance

  • The corpus luteum is a temporary endocrine structure involved in ovulation and early stages of pregnancy.
  • In horses, its anatomical location within the ovary makes rectal examination a challenging method for proper identification and evaluation.

Introduction to Ultrasonography

  • Ultrasonography, a non-invasive medical diagnostic procedure, presents a solution due to its ability to create images of internal body structures.
  • Through ultrasonography, practitioners can examine the formation, growth and stages of the corpus luteum in mares.

Focus of the Study

  • The research aims to acquaint veterinary practitioners with the ultrasonographic evaluation of the corpus luteum in mares.
  • The goal is to help them discern the various stages of the corpus luteum and link these stages to ovulation and persistent presence of the corpus luteum.
  • The study provides specific criteria and details about equine ultrasonography, enriching practitioners’ understanding through the latest scientific data.
