Ultrasound appearance of an equine testicular seminoma.

Abstract: A 16-year-old thoroughbred stallion developed sudden swelling of the left testicle. The stallion had previously been regarded as a unilateral cryptorchid. Ultrasound examination of the left testicle revealed a diffusely heterogeneous parenchyma. The testicle was diffusely hypoechoic with ill defined regions of hyperechogenicity giving the appearance of hypoechoic nodules throughout the testicular parenchyma. No normal testicular tissue was identifiable. An echogenic band, representing a pseudocapsule could be seen surrounding the testicle. Histopathologic diagnosis a seminoma.

This research focuses on a case study of a 16-year-old thoroughbred stallion that had a noticeable swelling of the left testicle, which was eventually diagnosed as a seminoma, or a form of testicular cancer, using ultrasound imaging.

Background of the case

  • The research article begins with the case of a 16-year-old thoroughbred stallion that suddenly developed a swelling on its left testicle.
  • The horse had previously been observed as a unilateral cryptorchid, meaning that one testicle had not descended into the scrotum.

Ultrasound examination and findings

  • The proband underwent an ultrasound examination of the affected testicle.
  • The report describes the ultrasound image of the testicle as diffusely heterogeneous parenchyma. Parenchyma refers to the functional parts of an organ in the body. In this context, it signifies the tissue of the horse’s testicle.
  • The testicle appeared generally hypoechoic or darker than usual on the ultrasound image, with equivocal regions of hyperechogenicity or areas appearing brighter contrasted against the darker background.
  • In simpler terms, the ominous ultrasonic appearance of the testicle can be likened to dark nodules spread throughout the testicular tissue.
  • The abnormal tissue was so expansive that no portion of normal testicular tissue could be recognized in the ultrasound images.

Pseudocapsule and Diagnosis

  • The ultrasound imaging also revealed what appeared to be a peculiar echogenic band enveloping the testicle, identified as a pseudocapsule.
  • This pseudocapsule is essentially a boundary of sorts hard-pressed on the testicle.
  • Comprehensively, based on the ultrasonography outcomes and further histopathological evaluation, a diagnosis of seminoma was established.
  • Seminoma is a sort of testicular tumor most commonly prevalent in human males, although it is not unusual in stallions also. It typically presents as a mass of abnormal cells and can cause considerable discomfort and physiological complications in the affected animal.
