Urogenital surgery performed with the mare standing.

Abstract: Many urogenital procedures of the mare are commonly performed with the mare standing. Ovariectomy via colpotomy was described as early as 1903, and the Caslick vulvoplasty was first described in 1937. As knowledge expands and instruments become more specialized, techniques will improve. With the introduction of laparoscopy, clinicians have not only been able to improve the previously described urogenital procedures but also to devise new procedures. This article describes multiple surgeries of the female urogenital tract, all of which can be performed with the mare standing, and describes a variety of approaches to some portions of the female urogenital tract.

Summary

This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.

The research article discusses the various urogenital surgical procedures that are performed on mares (female horses) while they are standing. It references historical techniques, advancements in surgical tools, as well as the impact of laparoscopic methods on the improvement and invention of new procedures.

Historical Precedents and Research Context

  • The research paper mentions some historical procedures and inventions that have paved the way for current surgeries. For example, the process of Ovariectomy via colpotomy, a technique to remove the ovaries through the vagina, has been in practice since 1903.
  • Another surgical procedure, Caslick vulvoplasty, was first described in 1937. This operation is done to prevent air and contaminants from entering the vagina, which could cause infection or sterility.

Advances in Urogenital Surgeries

  • The paper acknowledges that with the advancements in medical knowledge and the development of specialized tools, surgical techniques have significantly improved.
  • The emergence of laparoscopy, a type of surgical procedure that allows access to the abdomen and pelvis without making large incisions, has revolutionized urogenital procedures for mares.
  • Laparoscopy has not only improved existing surgical techniques but also has facilitated in inventing new procedures.

Description of Different Surgical Procedures

  • The primary focus of the research paper is describing a variety of surgeries of the female urogenital tract that can be performed with the mare standing.
  • An elaborate dissection is given on how to approach various portions of the female urogenital tract for these body-stationed procedures, highlighting the operational easiness and effectiveness of each procedure.
