Use of transvaginal ultrasound-guided puncture for elimination of equine pregnancies.
Abstract: Twinning is a major cause of abortion in mares. Although early management of twins is quite successful, twins that remain after 40 days are difficult to manage. This article reviews the current knowledge of the use of transvaginal ultrasound probe for elimination of twins. Several techniques are presented, as well as discussion on the best time during gestation for this technique to be used.

The research article discusses how transvaginal ultrasound-guided puncture can be utilized in equine medicine to manage and eliminate twin pregnancies, which often lead to abortions in mares. The authors review various techniques and suggest the optimal timeframe during gestation to implement this procedure.
Problem Overview
- Twining in mares is generally seen as problematic and is considered a major cause of abortion or death of the foal either during pregnancy or shortly after birth.
- Early management of twin pregnancies has been successful, but those that aren’t recognized and treated within the first 40 days of gestation are challenging to handle.
Transvaginal Ultrasound-Guided Puncture
- In this article, the researchers explore the utilization of a specific technique – transvaginal ultrasound-guided puncture – for the elimination of equine twin pregnancies.
- This approach involves the use of an ultrasound probe, guided transvaginally, to puncture and collapse the chorionic vesicle of the less viable fetus.
Highlighted Techniques
- The paper abstract mentions that the authors present several different techniques related to the ultrasound-guided puncture procedure.
- While specifics aren’t available in the abstract, these techniques likely vary based on factors such as gestational stage, position of the foal, and skill level of the practitioner.
Best Timing for the Procedure
- One critical element discussed in the paper is determining the optimal time frame during the gestation period to perform this procedure.
- Too early might lead to complications such as reabsorption of the twin or injury to the healthy foal, while too late could result in failed attempts leading to full-term twin pregnancy, which bears risks and complications for both the foals and the mare.
Twinning in Equines: An Ongoing Discussion
- By focusing on this specific technique and its use in the field, the authors contribute to the broader discussion of how to effectively manage and prevent twin pregnancies in equines.
