Usefulness of lymphocyte typing to exclude incorrectly assigned paternity in horses.
Abstract: Lymphocyte typing can be used to detect incorrectly identified parentage of horses. Efficacies of lymphocyte typing to solve paternity questions were calculated using gene frequency estimates of equine lymphocyte antigen (ELA) markers for Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds. Probabilities that ELA typing will detect an incorrectly assigned sire were 68.7% in Thoroughbreds, 67.9% in pacing Standardbreds, and 62.0% in trotting Standardbreds. These calculations demonstrate that ELA typing is among the most efficacious genetic systems for solving paternity questions in horses. Likewise, it could also be effective for blood type identification and solving other questions of parentage in horses.

This research paper suggests that lymphocyte typing can be an effective tool to verify the parentage of horses, particularly Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds. The research demonstrated that equine lymphocyte antigen (ELA) typing has a respective detection rate of 68.7%, 67.9% and 62% in Thoroughbreds, pacing Standardbreds, and trotting Standardbreds when identifying misattributed sires.
Understanding Lymphocyte Typing in Horses
- The focus of this study is on lymphocyte typing, a technique that uses genetic markers in the immune cells of horses, known as lymphocytes, to accurately identify parentage.
- Specifically, the method uses gene frequency estimates of Equine Lymphocyte Antigen (ELA), a selection of markers found in horse lymphocytes.
Efficacy of Lymphocyte Typing for Paternity Determination
- The researchers calculated the effectiveness of lymphocyte typing in rectifying incorrectly assigned paternity among different breeds of horses.
- The results showed that ELA typing holds a potential of detecting an incorrectly assigned sire 68.7% of the time in Thoroughbreds, 67.9% in pacing Standardbreds, and 62% in trotting Standardbreds.
Lymphocyte Typing and Broader Applications
- The study concludes that ELA typing is one of the most effective genetic systems for solving paternity questions in horses.
- It also suggests that lymphocyte typing could be useful in blood type identification and in resolving other queries related to horse lineage.
