[Veterinarians–notables of the cities and the country. Some stages in their social ascent from the second half of the 18th century to the start of the 20th century].
Abstract: During the second half of the 18th century scientific veterinary medicine, a new profession was born as a result of economic and military needs--losses of cattle as a consequence of infectious diseases and the growing demand for treatment to be given to the horses of the armies. At first the members of the emerging occupation, who are generally of very modest origin, hardly differ from the traditional actors of animal health. At the beginning of the 19th century the governments employ a large number of veterinarians for official missions to combat infectious diseases. As from the second half of the 19th century the skills of the veterinarians as doctors for animals and zootechnicians are beginning to be recognized by the rural population, whose increased income allows them more easily to enlist a veterinarian's services. From the 1860s onwards they also start to play a role in the monitoring of public health by controlling foodstuffs of animal origin. But it is only at the beginning of the 20th century that new technological progress, motor vehicles and the telephone (first in the cities, then in the country by way of telephone boxes), makes their work quicker and more efficient. New and strong antiseptics for external and internal use which help to combat many infectious diseases will however appear only around the 1950s.

The research article examines how the status and role of veterinarians gradually advanced from the second half of the 18th century until the start of the 20th century, transformed by economic needs, technological advancements, and societal recognition.
The Emergence of Scientific Veterinary Medicine
- The study begins by identifying the second half of the 18th century as the birth period of scientific veterinary medicine. This new profession sprang out of pressing economic and military needs, specifically the massive losses of cattle to infectious diseases and the surging demand for treating army horses.
- The authors note that, initially, the emerging vets, typically of quite modest origins, were indistinguishable from traditional caregivers of animals.
The Role of Governments in Promoting Veterinary Services
- The role of governments in employing veterinarians to fight infectious diseases was pivotal in the 19th century. This active involvement not only offered a boost to the profession, but also signified the importance vets held in addressing public health concerns.
Recognition by the Rural Population
- The research highlights how the services and skills of veterinarians began to get recognition by the second half of the 19th century. Their services became increasingly feasible for the rural community whose income had started to improve. This changing economic status of the rural population enabled them to afford and value the role of veterinarians.
Public Health Monitoring Role
- In the 1860s, veterinarians also started control foodstuffs of animal origins, essentially playing a significant part in public health monitoring. However, this role significantly progressed into the 20th century with technological advancement like the telephone and motor vehicles, which enhanced their speed and efficiency.
Technology and Antiseptics: A Leap in Veterinary Practices
- The 20th century showed a marked increase in the efficiency of veterinarians, primarily due to new technological progress. The advent of the telephone (even in the countryside courtesy of telephone boxes), and motor vehicles made their work more efficient and faster.
- However, effective antiseptics that helped in combating many infectious diseases didn’t emerge until around the 1950s. This technology, applied both externally and internally, represented a substantial leap in veterinary practices.
