Copper Sulfate
Copper sulfate, also known as cupric sulfate, is an inorganic source of copper in animal feed. Copper is an essential trace mineral that plays a vital role in various physiological functions in horses, including iron metabolism, connective tissue formation, and the functioning of the immune and nervous systems. Copper sulfate is often added to equine diets to ensure adequate copper intake, especially when natural feed sources are deficient in this mineral.
Copper sulfate should be balanced with zinc in accordance with recommended guidelines to maintain optimal health and performance in horses.
Organic forms of copper, such as copper proteinate or copper chelates, are generally considered more bioavailable than inorganic copper sulfate. As a result, many equine supplements prefer organic copper to help maximize the benefits of copper in the diet while reducing potential mineral interactions.
