Cornus officinalis (Asiatic Cornelian Cherry Fruit)

Cornus officinalis, commonly known as Asiatic cornelian cherry, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to East Asia. The fruit is the part most often used in traditional herbal preparations and contains iridoid glycosides, organic acids, tannins, and polyphenolic compounds. It is typically harvested when mature, then dried and processed for use in botanical formulas.

In equine supplements, Cornus officinalis may be included as a functional herbal ingredient rather than as a source of essential nutrients. Its naturally occurring phytochemicals have been studied primarily for antioxidant and metabolic effects in laboratory and other animal models, but species-specific research in horses is limited. As with other concentrated botanicals, inclusion level and product quality should be considered when formulating equine diets.
