D-Glucaric acid - Feed Ingredient

D-Glucaric acid is a naturally occurring compound derived from glucose through oxidation. It is also known by its chemical name, saccharic acid. D-Glucaric acid can be found in small amounts in various fruits and vegetables, including oranges, apples, and cruciferous vegetables. It can also be synthesized through chemical oxidation of glucose using nitric acid.

In feed and supplement formulations, D-glucaric acid is primarily utilized for its potential detoxification-supporting properties. It acts as a precursor to calcium D-glucarate, a compound known to inhibit the enzyme β-glucuronidase. This enzyme can interfere with the excretion of toxins and hormones conjugated in the liver by hydrolyzing glucuronides, potentially leading to reabsorption of these compounds in the gut. Specific benefits in horses require further investigation.

The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain D-Glucaric acid as an ingredient.
