Diflubenzuron
Diflubenzuron is a synthetic benzoylurea compound used as an insect growth regulator. It works by inhibiting the formation of chitin, a structural component of the insect exoskeleton, which interferes with normal development and prevents immature insects from successfully molting.
In equine products, diflubenzuron may be included in feed-through fly control formulations to help reduce the development of flies in manure. After being consumed by the horse, it passes into the manure, where it acts on developing fly larvae and interrupts their life cycle before they can emerge as adults. It is not used to provide protein, energy, vitamins, or minerals and does not act as a conventional insecticide or fly repellent on the horse. Diflubenzuron-containing products should be used according to label directions and applicable regulatory requirements.
