Flaxseed (Linseed) Meal
Flaxseed meal, also known as linseed meal, is derived from the seeds of the Linum usitatissimum plant after the oil has been extracted. The remaining seed material is finely milled to enhance digestibility and nutrient availability. While much of the oil is removed during processing, linseed meal still retains some residual fat and serves as a good source of protein, fiber, and essential nutrients.
Linseed meal differs from ground flaxseed, which is made by grinding whole flaxseeds without removing the oil. Ground flaxseed retains its full fat content, making it a richer source of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). In contrast, linseed meal has a lower fat content but provides higher protein and fiber levels. In equine diets, linseed meal is commonly included in feeds or supplements as a protein and fiber source and to help balance omega-6 to omega-3 ratios, particularly in horses consuming grain-based diets.
