Ground Corn

Ground Corn is a milled product derived from whole dried maize (Zea mays). It is typically yellow in color and consists of a mixture of particle sizes ranging from coarse to fine, depending on the degree of grinding. Ground corn retains most of the kernel’s components, including the starch-rich endosperm, germ, and bran, unless otherwise specified (e.g., de-germed or screened varieties).

In animal nutrition, including equine feed, ground corn is commonly used as an energy source due to its high starch content. It provides readily digestible carbohydrates that contribute to the caloric density of the diet. Ground corn may also supply small amounts of protein, fat, and various micronutrients, although its amino acid profile is not considered complete for most species.

It is typically included in feed rations to support energy needs, particularly in performance or growth diets. Ground corn may be used alone or in combination with other grains or ingredients, and its nutritional contribution depends on processing, particle size, and inclusion rate.
