Monosodium Phosphate
Monosodium phosphate (MSP) is a water-soluble inorganic compound that serves as a source of both phosphorus and sodium. It is commonly used in animal feed formulations, including equine diets, to supplement phosphorus levels, which are essential for bone development, energy metabolism, and cellular function. Phosphorus from MSP is highly bioavailable, making it an effective option for meeting dietary phosphorus requirements.
In horse feeds, monosodium phosphate is often included in balanced mineral supplements to ensure proper calcium-to-phosphorus ratios, which are critical for skeletal health. It is particularly useful in diets that are low in phosphorus or high in calcium, such as those based on legume hays like alfalfa. However, excessive phosphorus intake can disrupt calcium absorption, leading to imbalances that may affect bone integrity. Proper formulation is necessary to maintain optimal mineral balance in equine diets.
