Synovial fluid parameters in normal and osteochondritic hocks of horses with open physis. An investigation was carried out on most common synovial fluid parameters of normal and osteochondritic hocks of horses less than 12 months old in order to confirm the presence of an inflammatory process. Furthermore, a spectroscopic study was performed on synovial fluid from both normal and diseased hocks. A depolymerization of hyaluronic acid was demonstrated in synovial fluid from diseases joints, similar to that reported in human rheumatoid arthritis. A one month rest seem to normalize all parameters considered and in one joint, a return to normal infrared spectrum was demonstrated.
[Social and behavioral organization of horses on the Giara (Sardinia): distribution and aggregation]. In this paper some considerations on the environment of the 42 Kmq of the volcanic-basaltic Giara tableland are discussed. Conditioning by the environment and its effect on the distribution of a population of 712 horses is illustrated in view of their social and behavioural organization.
[The horses of Giara: variation of the thyroid activity and certain blood parameters between winter and summer]. The changes of some parameters in the blood serum of six Giara horses (3 males and 3 females) were checked weekly, in relation to the environmental temperature throughout a one winter and summer. T3, total lipids, triglycerides, urea nitrogen, creatinine, total protein, albumin, beta and gamma globulin showed significant difference between winter and summer and, with the exception of triglycerides, urea nitrogen and total protein were correlated to the environmental temperature. T4, glucose, uric acid and alpha globulin showed no difference between the two seasons and no correlation with the t...
Histochemical profile of articularis humeri muscle in the horse. In this study the histochemical fiber type analysis of the articularis humeri muscle of the horse was performed. This muscle is composed of type I and type IIA fibers. A large number of spindles has been observed and the presence of these receptors could help to understand the role played by this muscle.
[Seasonal changes in blood testosterone in the Giara horse]. The blood testosterone changes in three Giara stallions, average age 8 years old and average weight 183 Kgs, were checked weekly for a year using a radioimmunological method. The horses showed a highly seasonal hormonal activity concentrated in the first half of the year (winter and spring). In the second half of the year (summer and fall) the stallions showed low levels of testosterone. The highest level of the androgen hormone occurred in April, the lowest in October. The absolute levels of this hormone agreed substantially with the relative literature.
[Antiluteolytic activity of embryos in various animal species]. In mare, sheep and bitch the action of PGF2 alpha have been studied in the early pregnancy. Prostin F2 alpha (Upjohn) and Gabbrostim (Vetem ) are commercial names of PGF2 alpha used at doses which are luteolytic in the non pregnant female. Seric progesterone showed a temporaneous decrease but after four or five days the initial values were restored and none of the experimental females aborted. In the opinion of authors, embryo per se and/or with its adnexa might have interacted blocking the mechanism of luteolysis induced by the administration of PGF2 alpha.
[Investigations on the individual-region distribution of adipocyte diameters by means of advanced statistical methods]. The dimensional distributions of the adipocytes in Equus caballus in many subjects and in many regions have been studied: such distributions turn out to be in good approximation galtonian ones. Furthermore, all the logarithm populations of the cell diameters have significantly the same variance. The used statistical methods (ANOVA two way with replications, and TUKEY -test) indicate an extremely significant different among the various regions (the smallest cells are in the supra-orbital fossa, the greatest ones are in the abdominal subserous floor).
Immunochemical studies on beta-lactoglobulins. precipitin reactions of sow’s and mare’s mammary secretions against anti – bovine beta – lactoglobulin antiserum. By double diffusion in agarose gel, in well defined experimental conditions, cross reactions were observed between porcine beta-lactoglobulins and anti-bovine beta-lactoglobulin antisera. The immunological reactivity between these beta-lactoglobulins from a monogastric and the ruminant anti beta-lactoglobulin antiserum thus implies a certain degree of similarity between the monomeric beta-lactoglobulins examined and the dimeric of the ruminants. With the same antisera it also proved possible to demonstrate the presence of beta-lactoglobulins in the mammary secretions of another monogastric, na...
