Equine pulmonary disease: a case control study of 300 referred cases. Part 1: Examination techniques, diagnostic criteria and diagnoses.
Equine veterinary journal    November 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 6 416-421 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb04421.x
Dixon PM, Railton DI, McGorum BC.Three-hundred adult horses, referred from 1990 to 1993 inclusively, for pulmonary examination were assessed using standardised history taking and clinical, intrapleural pressure, arterial blood gases and pH, bronchoscopic and tracheal and broncho-alveolar lavage fluid (BALF) cytological examinations. Two-hundred and thirty-five cases were referred with overt signs of pulmonary disease and the remaining 65 cases were referred for pulmonary examination because of reduced exercise (usually racing) performance or prolonged dyspnoea after racing. No pulmonary disease was detected in 30 cases. The 2...

Comparison of polysulphated glycosaminoglycan and sodium hyaluronate with placebo in treatment of traumatic arthritis in horses.
Equine veterinary journal    September 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 5 356-362 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb04070.x
Gaustad G, Larsen S.A randomised double blind and placebo controlled clinical study was carried out. Standardbred trotters (n=77), age 3-4 years) with moderate to severe lameness were grouped according to number of affected joints and, within each group, were randomised for treatment with polysulphated glycosaminoglycan (PSGAG), sodium hyaluronate (SH) or placebo for 3 weeks. The horses were inspected weekly with a final examination 2-4 weeks after the end of treatment. Mean initial lameness score was significantly reduced during treatment and at the last examination in all 3 groups (P<0.01). Additionally, the...
Modulation of 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3 beta-HSD) activity in the equine placenta by pregnenolone and progesterone metabolites.
Equine veterinary journal    September 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 5 342-347 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb04068.x
Chavatte PM, Rossdale PD, Tait AD.The purpose of this study was to measure 3beta-HSD activity in the equine placenta and to assess the effect of fetal and maternal blood plasma progestagens on 3beta-HSD activity was measured in 8 late gestation (collected by caesarian section at 250 to 320 days) and 7 term (collected by caesarian section at 250 to 320 days) and 7 term (collected at birth) equine placentae using a tritium release assay with [3alpha-3H] pregnenolone as substrate. Mean +/- s.d. Km(app) and Vmax for term placentae were in general higher than for late gestation placentae (0.129 +/- 0.217 micromol/l and 23.85 +/- 9....
Harem stability and reproductive success of Misaki feral mares.
Equine veterinary journal    September 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 5 368-372 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb04072.x
Kaseda Y, Khalil AM, Ogawa H.The stability of relationships between harem stallions and mares (consort relations) was investigated and the durations of inter partum intervals were determined in order to establish if there was any correlation between the stability of consort relation and reproductive success of mares in Misaki feral horses. Thirty-four mares were observed continuously for more than 5 years. The lifetime stability was 80-100% (mean 92.4%) for 16 mares, 60-79% (mean 70.4%) for 10 mares and 0-59% (mean 27.9%) for 8 mares. The continuous length (years) of specific consort relations was 2-10 years and was found...
Small intestinal herniation through the epiploic foramen: 53 cases (1987-1993).
Equine veterinary journal    September 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 5 373-380 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb04073.x
Vachon AM, Fischer AT.The incidence of epiploic entrapment of the small intestine in horses undergoing celiotomy for colic was 5%. The condition was more prevalent in older (mean 9.81 years) gelding and Thoroughbred horses. Preoperative peritoneal protein level was a good prognostic indicator as it was significantly greater in the nonsurvivor (39.4 +/- 5.10) group than in the survivor group (26.6 +/- 14.0) (P<0.05). Abdominal ultrasonography allowed earlier diagnosis and surgical intervention in nonpainful cases with inconclusive rectal findings. Surgery was completed in 46 horses and 44 horses recovered from an...
Role of navicular bone shape in the pathogenesis of navicular disease: a radiological study.
Equine veterinary journal    September 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 5 390-393 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb04075.x
Dik KJ, van den Broek J.From progeny lists of 30 Dutch Warmblood sires, 586 3-year-old females by these stallions were randomly selected, each progeny group aimed at 20 animals for statistical reasons. The front feet of the sires and female progeny were examined radiographically using lateromedial and dorsopalmar upright pedal projections. The radiological features associated with navicular disease were classified 0-4 using a standardised classification, grades 3 and 4 representing the more severe changes. The shape of the proximal articular border of the navicular bone outline on the dorsopalmar view was classified ...
Ultrastructure of the secretory endometrium during oestrus in young maiden and foaled mares.
Equine veterinary journal    September 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 5 382-388 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb04074.x
Tunón AM, Rodriguez-Martinez H, Haglund A, Albihn A, Magnusson U, Einarsson S.Cyclical accumulation of uterine fluid occurs during oestrus and is often seen in excessive volumes in mares considered susceptible to endometritis. Since the mechanisms behind the formation of free uterine fluid remain to be clarified, the fine structure of the secretory equine endometrium was studied in biopsies collect during videoendoscopy from 14 endometritis-free, 4-9-year-old mares during oestrus. A distinct oedema of the tunica mucosa was evident. The surface epithelium had both ciliated and nonciliated cells and, particularly at the uterine body, often presented intra-epithelial macro...
Localisation of 15-hydroxy prostaglandin dehydrogenase (PGDH) and steroidogenic enzymes in the equine placenta.
Equine veterinary journal    September 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 5 334-339 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb04067.x
Han X, Rossdale PD, Ousey J, Holdstock N, Allen WR, Silver M, Fowden AL, McGladdery AJ, Labrie F, Belanger A.15-hydroxy prostaglandin dehydrogenase (PGDH) is the critical enzyme that determines metabolism of primary prostaglandins. Its expression is determined in part by steroid hormones, particularly progesterone, formed from delta(5) steroids through 3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3beta-HSD) activity. To assess whether the regulation of PGDH might occur in a paracrine, autocrine or intracrine fashion, we used immunohistochemistry (IHC) to determine the localisation of key steroidogenic enzymes in the equine placenta and compared these patterns to the distribution of immunoreactive (IR-) PGDH. ...
Tendonitis of the deep digital flexor tendon in the distal metacarpal/metatarsal region associated with tenosynovitis of the digital sheath in the horse.
Equine veterinary journal    September 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 5 348-355 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb04069.x
Barr AR, Dyson SJ, Barr FJ, O'Brien JK.Twenty-four horses with ultrasonographic evidence of tendonitis of the deep digital flexor tendon in the metacarpal/metatarsal region were seen over a 7 year period. Most horses had mild to moderate lameness and distension of the digital flexor tendon sheath in the affected limb. Intrasynovial analgesia of the digital flexor tendon sheath consistently improved the degree of lameness. Ultrasonography most commonly revealed small, distinct, often circular, focal hypoechoic areas within the deep digital flexor tendon which usually extended less than 1 cm proximodistally. The degree of lameness an...
Ophthalmic cyclosporine in equine keratitis and keratouveitis: 11 cases.
Equine veterinary journal    September 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 5 327-333 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb04066.x
Gratzek AT, Kaswan RL, Martin CL, Champagne ES, White SL.Topical cyclosporine A was safely used in a series of 11 cases of equine keratitis and keratouveitis and appeared to be an effective anti-inflammatory agent in 9 cases. The clinical diagnoses included interstitial keratouveitis, endotheliitis, multifocal punctate keratopathy and a melting stromal ulcer. In most cases, the presence or absence of insidious bacterial infection was not conclusively determined. Topical cyclosporine A had no deleterious effects in this series of cases. The authors suggest that topical cyclosporine in both aqueous and lipid base vehicles should be investigated and ev...
Descriptive epidemiological study of equine laminitis.
Equine veterinary journal    September 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 5 364-367 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb04071.x
Slater MR, Hood DM, Carter GK.A descriptive and matched case-control study of laminitis was conducted in 7 private practices and at the Texas Veterinary Medical Centre (TVMC) between May 1992 and July 1993. Out of 108 horses with laminitis, 19 acute (49%) and 20 chronic (51%) cases were seen in private practice and 16 acute (23%) and 53 (77%) cases at the TVMC. Gastrointestinal disease was the most common problem in 19/35 horses (54%), occurring just prior to the onset of acute laminitis in all hospitals. Among all horses in the study, most commonly used drugs were phenylbutazone (68%), acepromazine (34%), dimethyl sulphox...

Rheumatoid factor, anti-heat shock protein (65 kDa) antibodies and anti-nuclear antibodies in equine joint diseases.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 4 288-295 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb03079.x
Carter SD, Osborne AC, May SA, Bennett D.To consider the hypothesis that autoimmune mechanisms may contribute to the pathology of equine joint diseases, 3 autoimmune responses were assayed in sera and synovial fluids. IgM-rheumatoid factor and antibodies to heat shock protein 65 kDa were determined by ELISA; anti-nuclear antibodies were assayed by indirect immunofluorescence to whole cell nuclear components. All parameters showed only modest increases, if any and not in a pattern related to disease, although some statistically significant increases were detected. Group analysis showed significantly elevated synovial fluid IgM-rheumat...

Effects of glyceryl trinitrate (nitroglycerin) on pulmonary vascular pressures in standing thoroughbred horses.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 4 275-280 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb03076.x
Manohar M.Strenuously exercising Thoroughbreds exhibit a dramatic increase in pulmonary capillary blood pressure, which contributes to stress failure of pulmonary capillaries resulting in exercise induced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH). One strategy to prevent EIPH is, therefore, to lower the pulmonary capillary blood pressure of exercising horses. Recent work in several species suggests that nitric oxide plays a significant role in maintaining low vascular resistance in the pulmonary circulation; however, the effects of nitrovasodilators (which work via the same mechanism as nitric oxide) on equine pulmo...
Comparison of the anti-inflammatory actions of flunixin and ketoprofen in horses applying PK/PD modelling.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 4 247-256 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb03073.x
Landoni MF, Lees P.A comparative study in horses of the pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) of 2 extensively used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), flunixin (FXN) and ketoprofen (KTP), was carried out applying PK/PD modelling. To evaluate the anti-inflammatory properties of these drugs a model of acute inflammation, comprising surgically implanted subcutaneous tissue cages stimulated by intracaveal injection of carrageenan, was used. FXN elimination half-life (T1/2 beta) in plasma was 3.37 +/- 1.09 h. However, in exudate a much longer T1/2 beta was obtained (15.99 +/- 3.80 h). Apparent v...
Photic headshaking in the horse: 7 cases.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 4 306-311 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb03082.x
Madigan JE, Kortz G, Murphy C, Rodger L.Seven horses with headshaking are described. No physical abnormalities were detected in any of the cases. Six of these horses had onset of clinical signs in the spring. The role of light was assessed by application of a blindfold or dark grey lens to the eyes, covering the eyes with a face mask and observing the horse in total darkness outdoors. Cessation of headshaking was observed with blindfolding (5/5 horses), night darkness outdoors (4/4 horses) and use of grey lenses (2/3 horses). Outdoor behaviour suggested efforts to avoid light in 4/4 cases. The photic sneeze in man is suggested as a ...
Changes in breathing pattern in the normal horse at rest up to age one year.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 4 265-274 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb03075.x
Koterba AM, Wozniak JA, Kosch PC.Changes in pattern of airflow, sequence of respiratory muscle activation and generated pressures were measured serially in a group of foals during the first year post partum, in order to describe the maturation of the equine breathing pattern. In neonatal foals, inspiration and expiration were both primarily active and airflow pattern was essentially monophasic. By age 1 year, foals displayed essentially the same breathing pattern previously described in adult horses, utilising a combination of active and passive inspiration and expiration to breathe around, rather than from, the relaxation vo...
Biokinematic effects of collection on the trotting gaits in the elite dressage horse.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 4 281-287 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb03078.x
Holmström M, Fredricson I, Drevemo S.Trot in hand, working trot, collected trot, passage and piaffe of 6 Grand Prix dressage horses were recorded by high speed film (250 frames/s). Angular patterns and hoof trajectories of the left fore- and hindlimbs were analysed and presented as mean and standard deviation (s.d.) curves. Speed and stride length decreased and fore- and hind stance phase durations increased with collection resulting in no suspension in piaffe. The diagonal advanced placement was positive in all gaits except for piaffe. Most of the changes in forelimb angular patterns were effects of reduction in forelimb pendula...
Effects of ketoprofen and phenylbutazone on chronic hoof pain and lameness in the horse.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 4 296-300 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb03080.x
Owens JG, Kamerling SG, Stanton SR, Keowen ML.The analgesic effects of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, ketoprofen (2.2 and 3.63 mg/kg bwt) and phenylbutazone (4.4 mg/kg bwt) were compared in 7 horses with chronic laminitis. Hoof pain was quantified objectively by means of an electronic hoof tester and lameness was subjectively graded on a modified Obel scale. Ketoprofen at a dose of 3.63 mg/kg bwt (phenylbutazone equimolar dose) reduced hoof pain and lameness to a greater extent than the 2.2 mg/kg dose and phenylbutazone. These effects were still present at 24 h in 3 of the 4 pain tests, including lameness grade. These data sugg...
Clinical features of the 1992 outbreak of equine viral arteritis in Spain.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 4 301-304 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb03081.x
Monreal L, Villatoro AJ, Hooghuis H, Ros I, Timoney PJ.During 1992, a widespread outbreak of Equine viral arteritis (EVA) occurred at a riding establishment near Barcelona, Spain. A total of 31 out of 186 horses on the premises displayed clinical signs, most frequently, fever, depression, mild ventral and limb oedema and a vesicular-erosive stomatitis, with hypersalivation, petechiations and small ulcerations. Affected horses developed illness of varying severity with only a few exhibiting a severe form of the disease and no mortality was recorded. Haematological and blood biochemical examination the most severely affected horses revealed a thromb...
Ventilatory and timing parameters in normal horses at rest up to age one year.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1995   Volume 27, Issue 4 257-264 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1995.tb03074.x
Koterba AM, Wozniak JA, Kosch PC.The purpose of the study was to document the developmental changes in the ventilatory and timing parameters associated with quiet breathing at rest in awake, standing horses during the first year post partum. Tidal volume (VT), breathing frequency, airflow, mechanical timing intervals and minute ventilation (VE) were measured serially in foals age 24 h-1 year. In the growing foal, VE increased due to a progressive rise in VT, in spite of a pronounced decrease in respiratory frequency. When normalised to body weight (bwt), VE/kg declined with maturation in a curvilinear fashion, from mean +/- s...
