Laser Doppler flowmetry: muscular microcirculation in anaesthetized horses.
Equine veterinary journal    September 1, 1986   Volume 18, Issue 5 391-395 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1986.tb03663.x
Serteyn D, Mottart E, Michaux C, Micheels J, Philippart C, Lavergne L, Guillon C, Lamy M.Muscular microcirculation was studied in seven halothane anaesthetised horses in lateral recumbency using a laser Doppler flowmeter. A significant difference between the dependent and the uppermost triceps brachii was recorded. In the dependent muscles, microflow at first decreased and then increased up to the starting value. In the uppermost muscles, a significant rise of the microflow was measured.
Changes in serum muscle enzyme levels associated with training schedules and stage of the oestrous cycle in Thoroughbred racehorses.
Equine veterinary journal    September 1, 1986   Volume 18, Issue 5 371-374 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1986.tb03657.x
Frauenfelder HC, Rossdale PD, Ricketts SW, Allen WR.Blood samples were collected twice weekly over a nine month period from 24 Thoroughbred racehorses in training at Newmarket to study the effects of daily training schedules and stage of oestrous cycle on serum enzyme levels and clinical signs of equine exertional myopathy. The sampling period extended from November to July and was performed between 16:00 h and 18:00 h so as to be at least 6 h after exercise. Serum creatine kinase, aspartate aminotransferase and plasma progestogen concentrations were measured. All horses were subjected to a similar traditional training programme. The study demo...
Detomidine: a new sedative for horses.
Equine veterinary journal    September 1, 1986   Volume 18, Issue 5 366-370 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1986.tb03655.x
Clarke KW, Taylor PM.Detomidine, given intravenously at doses of 5 to 30 (mean 13) micrograms/kg bodyweight (bwt), provided adequate sedation for a variety of clinical procedures in 93 per cent of administrations, and improved the ease of handling in the remaining animals. Side effects of ataxia and bradycardia were minimal at the lower dose rates. Higher doses were required for intramuscular use. In experimental trials 10 and 20 micrograms/kg bwt resulted in deep sedation and also significant hypertension and bradycardia of over 15 mins duration. Current literature on the use of detomidine in horses is reviewed.
Use of contrast radiography in the investigation of tenosynovitis and bursitis in horses.
Equine veterinary journal    September 1, 1986   Volume 18, Issue 5 375-382 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1986.tb03658.x
Hago BE, Vaughan LC.Contrast radiography, using a 25 per cent solution of sodium diatrizoate, has been used for the investigation of tenosynovitis and bursitis in horses. The procedure was undertaken on a series of 32 clinical cases and on specimens obtained at autopsy. Lesions affecting the extensor tendon sheaths at the carpus, the digital sheath, the tarsal sheath and the bursae at the elbow, hock and fetlock were examined by this means. The results showed the procedure offered the clinician useful information about the nature of the interior of these structures, particularly as regards the presence of adhesio...
Preliminary study of tendon biopsy in the horse.
Equine veterinary journal    September 1, 1986   Volume 18, Issue 5 383-387 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1986.tb03659.x
Webbon PM.A series of experimental tendon biopsies is described. Three biopsies were taken from the lateral digital extensor tendon (LDET) and three from the superficial flexor tendon (SFT). The LDET biopsies resulted in little discomfort whereas the SFT biopsies led to temporary lameness. The tendons were examined histologically up to 99 days after the biopsies were removed. In all of the tendons the defect filled with granulation tissue which subsequently became organised as a longitudinally orientated collagenous scar tissue. In this small series of biopsies the histological effects of the biopsy per...
Observations on the long term effects of Brucella abortus infection in the horse, including effects during pregnancy and lactation.
Equine veterinary journal    September 1, 1986   Volume 18, Issue 5 388-390 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1986.tb03661.x
MacMillan AP, Cockrem DS.Five mares and a stallion were studied from three to 30 months after experimental infection with Brucella abortus strain 544. The mares bred normally. No organisms were recovered from horses or from pregnant Friesian heifer contacts. Titres of serum antibody in the antiglobulin (Coombs) and complement fixation tests fell more slowly than those assessed by other tests. The serum of one foal yielded maternal antibody. An intradermal test was positive in infected adults only, and negative in all foals.
Elastase-producing microorganisms in horse lungs: their possible role in the pathogenesis of chronic pulmonary disease in the horse.
Equine veterinary journal    September 1, 1986   Volume 18, Issue 5 396-400 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1986.tb03665.x
Grünig G, Von Fellenberg R, Maier R, Corboz L.Seventeen out of 21 horses had pulmonary microbial organisms which reached considerable numbers in seven cases. Elastase-producing microorganisms from the environment (Streptomyces species and to a lesser extent Bacillus species) constituted 22 per cent to 99 per cent (mean 79 per cent) of the total growth. There was a considerable number of microorganisms with in vitro-produced elastases which were not or only slightly affected by horse serum. There was no correlation between numbers of organisms and pulmonary histopathological findings thus the significance of these microorganisms in the pat...
Treatment of guttural pouch mycosis.
Equine veterinary journal    September 1, 1986   Volume 18, Issue 5 362-365 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1986.tb03654.x
Church S, Wyn-Jones G, Parks AH, Ritchie HE.Seventeen cases of guttural pouch mycosis (including two bilaterally affected cases) were diagnosed in a three year period. The presenting signs were, in order of frequency, epistaxis at rest, nasal catarrh, pharyngeal paralysis, ipsilateral laryngeal hemiplegia, swelling of the submandibular/parotid region, extension of the head and neck and dyspnoea. Ligation of the origin of the internal carotid and occipital arteries was attempted in 10 of the cases exhibiting epistaxis. Bilateral ligation was performed on one animal with an untoward sequelae. Where surgery was successfully completed furth...

Surgical management of intussusception in the horse.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1986   Volume 18, Issue 4 313-321 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1986.tb03640.x
Edwards GB.During a 14 year period, 27 of 310 horses undergoing laparotomy because of abdominal pain were found to have an intussusception involving the small intestine (16 cases) or caecum (11 cases). The clinical signs, operative findings and techniques adopted to overcome the obstruction are described. An evaluation of possible predisposing factors provided further evidence of the important role of the tapeworm Anoplocephala perfoliata in initiating intussusception involving the ileum and caecum.
