The key role of Spain in the traffic of West Nile virus lineage 1 strains between Europe and Africa.
Infectious diseases (London, England)    June 5, 2024   Volume 56, Issue 9 743-758 doi: 10.1080/23744235.2024.2348633
Aguilera-Sepúlveda P, Cano-Gómez C, Villalba R, Borges V, Agüero M, Bravo-Barriga D, Frontera E, Jiménez-Clavero MÁ, Fernández-Pinero J.West Nile Virus (WNV) is a zoonotic arbovirus worldwide spread. Seasonal WNV outbreaks occur in the Mediterranean basin since the late 1990's with ever-increasing incidence. In Southern Spain WNV is endemic, as disease foci - caused by WNV lineage 1 (WNV-L1) strains - occur every year. On the contrary, WNV-L2 is the dominant lineage in Europe, so most European WNV sequences available belong to this lineage, WNV-L1 sequences being still scarce. Unassigned: To fill this gap, this study reports the genetic characterisation of 27 newly described WNV-L1 strains, involved in outbreaks affecting wild...
Veterinarians and zoonotic pathogens, infections and diseases – questionnaire study and case series, Finland.
Infectious diseases (London, England)    February 12, 2024   Volume 56, Issue 5 384-392 doi: 10.1080/23744235.2024.2313662
Jokelainen P, Virtala AK, Raulo S, Kantele A, Vapalahti O, Kinnunen PM.Veterinarians are at risk for numerous zoonotic infections. In this paper, we summarise descriptions of zoonotic infections from a questionnaire study and a series of work-related zoonotic cases, aiming to add to the knowledge on occupational zoonotic risks of veterinarians. Unassigned: We collected data on zoonotic infections contracted by veterinarians in Finland in two studies:1) using a questionnaire in 2009, and 2) inviting veterinarians who had encountered an occupational zoonosis to report it in structured interviews in 2019. Unassigned: In the questionnaire study in 2009, of 306 veteri...
Epidemiological and clinical aspects on West Nile virus, a globally emerging pathogen.
Infectious diseases (London, England)    May 20, 2016   Volume 48, Issue 8 571-586 doi: 10.3109/23744235.2016.1164890
David S, Abraham AM.Since the isolation of West Nile virus (WNV) in 1937, in Uganda, it has spread globally, causing significant morbidity and mortality. While birds serve as amplifier hosts, mosquitoes of the Culex genus function as vectors. Humans and horses are dead end hosts. The clinical manifestations of West Nile infection in humans range from asymptomatic illness to West Nile encephalitis. Methods: The laboratory offers an array of tests, the preferred method being detection of RNA and serum IgM for WNV, which, if detected, confirms the clinical diagnosis. Although no definitive antiviral therapy and vacc...
