Nitroblue tetrazolium reduction by neutrophils of newborn foals, adult horses, and a foal infected with Rhodococcus (Corynebacterium) equi. Equine neutrophil function was studied in 24 newborn foals, 10 adult horses, and a foal infected with R. equi by the quantitative nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction test. There was no difference between results in newborn foals and adult horses. A foal naturally infected with R. equi showed normal values of NBT reduction test at birth, and after the initial clinical signs, the spontaneous reduction of NBT by neutrophils was found to be remarkably increased until a week before death
Heart rate and ECG response to twitching in Thoroughbred foals and mares. Changes of the heart rate and ECG to twitching were examined using 5 Thoroughbred foals at various ages and their mares. The effect of the heart rate decrease to twitching was significantly greater in the foals than in the mares. The decreased heart rate in the foals continued during and after the twitching. Changes of the T wave in the A-B lead ECG shown as enhancement of the negative ingredient of the T wave were observed both in the foals and in the mares, accompanied by a decrease in the heart rate during and/or after the twitching. Two out of the five foals showed second-degree A-V block ...
Fetal and maternal heart rates in a case of twin pregnancy of the Thoroughbred horse. Fetal electrocardiogram in a twin pregnancy of a Thoroughbred horse was recorded. Two colts were born alive at 340 days of gestation. One was healthy but the other was growth-retarded. Both fetal heart rates decreased similarly with gestational age, but the discrepancy was noted from 4 days before parturition. The higher heart rate seemed to be obtained from the growth-retarded colt. Maternal heart rate increased gradually with the advancement of gestational period and then increased prominently during the last 2 weeks before parturition.
Changes in the skeletal muscles volume in horses with growth. The area of the largest transverse section and the number of muscle fibres in a unit sectional area (1 mm2) were examined in 8 trunk and 12 extremity muscles of young and adult 16 light horses and 8 ponies. It was found that the area of the largest transverse section was enlarged and the number of muscle fibres in a unit area was decreased, with the advance in age. This result suggests that the development of muscle volume does not depend on the increase in the number of fibres, but depends on the hypertrophy of each muscle fibre.
Second-degree atrioventricular block observed in a Thoroughbred foal on 2.5 months of age. Electrocardiographic observation in 10 Thoroughbred horses has been carried out from fetal stages to 12 months after birth. In this observation a filly out of 10 foals at a resting state showed second-degree atrioventricular {A-V) block with sinus arrhythmia after 2.5 months of age. The number of dropped beats and the irregularity of sinus arrhythmia in these blocks were affected by the atrial rate, and several variations of Wenckebach phenomenon were shown under the influence of the artial rate. Electrocardiographic characteristics of second-degree A-V block in the present filly might be simi...
