Growth plate defects in foals.
The Veterinary record    February 28, 1976   Volume 98, Issue 9 165-168 doi: 10.1136/vr.98.9.165
Vaughan LC.Local disorders of bone growth form an important group of the orthopaedic problems that occur in foals. The recognition of the condition presented is essential so that the appropriate corrective measures may be instituted, and an accurate prognostication made. A knowledge of the applied anatomy of the growth plate is essential to the understanding of these cases. Consideration is given to epiphyseal separation and to angular deformity, from the point of view of diagnosis, prognosis and treatment.
Practical aspects of equine virus abortion in the United Kingdom.
The Veterinary record    February 21, 1976   Volume 98, Issue 8 153-155 doi: 10.1136/vr.98.8.153
Jeffcott LB, Rossdale PD.The current knowledge of the clinical signs, epidemiology and pathogenesis of abortion due to the equid herpesvirus (EHV 1) is reviewed. The relationship between the respiratory and abortigenic forms of the disease is discussed as well as the low incidence of virus abortion in the UK compared to some other parts of the world. Some practical aspects of the disease as they affect stud management are considered including methods of diagnosis, prophylaxis and the necessary action to be taken to prevent spread of infection.
Free, autologous, skin transplantation in the horse.
The Veterinary record    February 7, 1976   Volume 98, Issue 6 105-110 doi: 10.1136/vr.98.6.105
Frankland AL, Morris PG, Spreull JS.Seven pieces of autologous skin were transplanted onto freshly created, full thickness skin defects on the limbs and back of a one-year-old, male, piebald, Shetland pony. The transplantations were completed in two operative sessions, the transplants on the left side were done in the first session and the right side in the second. The sizes of the transplants varied from 20 sq cm to 2 sq cm and their thicknesses from whole skin to very thin, split skin. Donor sites were both rumps and the right side of the neck. Six of the seven grafts and two thirds of the remaining graft, were accepted. Both ...

Oxibendazole: critical anthelmintic trials in equids.
The Veterinary record    December 6, 1975   Volume 97, Issue 23 442-444
Kates KC, Colglazier ML, Enzie FD.The efficacy of oxibendazole against gastrointestinal parasites of horses was evaluated by the critical test method. Naturally infected ponies of various ages were given single oral doses of 5, 10, or 15 mg-kg of bodyweight. The drug was highly effective against adult large strongylids (Strongylus vulgaris, S edentatus, S equins), adult small strongylids (especially species of the genera Cylicostephanus, Cylicocyclus, Cyaathostomum, and Triodontophorus), and adult and larval stages of the large pinworm, Oxyuris equi. There was no apparent dose-related differences in efficacy. Oxibendazole was ...
A health service for horses.
The Veterinary record    November 22, 1975   Volume 97, Issue 21 408-410 doi: 10.1136/vr.97.21.408
Simons MA.The current position of the horse in the United Kingdom is discussed and the attitudes of the horse-owning public are examined. It is suggested that there are welfare, economic and practical advantages to owners and the veterinary profession in a veterinary health scheme for horses. A scheme which has been tried successfully in the field is discussed.

The equine practice laboratory.
The Veterinary record    October 25, 1975   Volume 97, Issue 17 320-324 doi: 10.1136/vr.97.17.320
Ricketts SW, Rossdale PD.The authors discuss the value of a practice laboratory to the equine clinician and its priorities. Laboratory examinations of particular value are described in relation to their clinical application. The need to establish normal values according to laboratory and horse population is stressed. Tables of normal parameters related to age groups of horses in the authors' practice are presented.

Diarrhoea in horses associated with ulceration of the colon and caecum resulting from S vulgaris larval migration.
The Veterinary record    September 20, 1975   Volume 97, Issue 12 221-225 doi: 10.1136/vr.97.12.221
Greatorex JC.The clinical manifestations of a diarrhoeic syndrome of horses with ulceration of the mucosae of the colon and caecum are described. Patients could be divided into three groups according to their presenting symptoms and the disease is probably caused by the thrombo-embolism associated with migrating larvae of Strongylus vulgaris. The differential diagnosis, prognosis and treatment are outlined with particular reference to the use of antithrombotic agents.

The effect of excess dietary iodine on pregnant mares and foals.
The Veterinary record    August 2, 1975   Volume 97, Issue 05 93-95 doi: 10.1136/vr.97.5.93
Drew B, Barber WP, Williams DG.On a thoroughbred stud four foals were born with greatly enlarged thyroids and leg weakness. Two foals died within 18 hours of birth, the others subsequently recovered. An enlarged thyroid was also evident in one of the resident mares. The thyroids from the dead foals were hyperplastic. Feed analyses showed that the mares had an iodine intake of about 83 mg daily, 8-8 ppm of the dietary dry matter, due almost entirely to the high iodine content of a proprietary compound horse nut which had been fed at the daily rate of 12 lb per head. It was concluded from the histology of the thyroids, the hi...

Papers and articles measurement of central venous pressure in horses.
The Veterinary record    July 26, 1975   Volume 97, Issue 4 66-69 doi: 10.1136/vr.97.4.66
Hall LW, Nigam JM.Central venous pressure measurements were made in 74 horses and ponies free from clinical evidence of cardiopulmonary disease. Using the sternal manubrium as the zero reference point, the mean value obtained was 12 cm H2O (S.D. +/- 6). There was a significant correlation with body weight (r=0.6, p less than 0.001) but there was none with age, sex, breed or type. During halothane anaesthesia, using the same reference point, the mean value was 24.5 cm H2O (S.D. +/- 6) in 28 animals in right lateral recumbency, 29 cm H2O (S.D. +/- 8) in 17 animals in left lateral recumbency and -6 cm H20 (S.D. +/...
