A technique for transrectal ultrasonography of stallions during ejaculation.
Theriogenology    November 1, 1991   Volume 36, Issue 5 831-837 doi: 10.1016/0093-691x(91)90349-i
Weber JA, Woods GL.A technique was developed in which the accessory sex glands of stallions were visualized with transrectal ultrasonography during ejaculation. The technique was judged to be effective, since 10 of 11 stallions were trained to tolerate transrectal ultrasonography during ejaculation; they ejaculated during 195 of 200 attempts, and acceptable visualization of their accessory sex glands and excurrent ducts occurred during 97 of 195 ejaculations. Sixty-five percent (89 136 ) of the recordings were successful for stallions that weighed more than 300 kg, whereas 14% (8 59 ) of the recordings were succ...
Measurements of the accuracy of clinical diagnoses of equine neurologic disease.
Journal of veterinary internal medicine    November 1, 1991   Volume 5, Issue 6 332-334 doi: 10.1111/j.1939-1676.1991.tb03146.x
Mayhew IG.Parameters for the accuracy of clinical diagnosis of neurologic diseases in the horse were determined from 210 horses in which a definitive pathologic diagnosis was confirmed. The overall efficiency of diagnosis for all diseases was 0.95 although the validity varied from 0.79 to 1.00, the sensitivity varied from 0.73 to 0.95, and the specificity varied from 0.88 to 1.00 for individual disease categories. Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis was overdiagnosed, whereas Eastern equine encephalomyelitis, equine degenerative myeloencephalopathy, and traumatic neurologic disease were underdiagnosed. T...
[Adenoma of the pigmented epithelium of the iris with endothelialization and descemetization in the horse].
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    November 1, 1991   Volume 38, Issue 9 652-659
Daicker B, Gywat L, Keller M, Spiess B, Brückner R.The authors describe peculiar tumors with brown-white piebald anterior surface, which had grown bilaterally from the corpora nigra (C.N.) of an adult horse and occluded the pupils. The surgical procedure for removing the larger tumor and the postoperative treatment are described. The findings by light and electron microscopy suggest that the tumor represent a so-called adenoma of the iris pigment epithelium. The white patches on its surface consist of newly formed Descemet-like material produced by displaced corneal endothelial cells, which have probably grown on the tumor after contact with t...
Femoral head ostectomy in horses and cattle.
Veterinary surgery : VS    November 1, 1991   Volume 20, Issue 6 453-458 doi: 10.1111/j.1532-950x.1991.tb00354.x
Squire KR, Fessler JF, Toombs JP, Van Sickle DC, Blevins WE.Femoral head ostectomy was performed in six horses, three ponies, and four cattle for treatment of fractures of the femoral capital physis, coxofemoral luxation, fractured acetabulum, or severe degenerative joint disease. The procedures were performed via a cranial approach that did not involve osteotomy of the greater trochanter. A dorsal approach for femoral head ostectomy via osteotomy of the greater trochanter was evaluated in three healthy adult ponies. Three animals (2 ponies, 1 calf) were euthanatized within a month and one horse was euthanatized at year 2 due to postoperative complicat...

Equine veterinary journal    November 1, 1991   Volume 23, Issue 6 461-465 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1991.tb03762.x
Voros K, Holmes JR, Gibbs C.Two-dimensional echocardiography (2DE) was performed on 22 unsedated Thoroughbred and part Thoroughbred horses weighing between 411 and 650 kg to establish normal reference values for 2DE measurements. Animals stood during examinations performed with a 3.5 MHz mechanical sector transducer using various transducer positions and tomographic planes. Right ventricular diameter (RVD), ventricular septal thickness (VSTh), aortic diameter (AoD), area of the chordal lumen of the left ventricle (CTA), left ventricular diameter (LVD) and left atrial diameter (LAD) were determined at ventricular end-dias...
The prevalence of enteric pathogens in diarrhoeic thoroughbred foals in Britain and Ireland.
Equine veterinary journal    November 1, 1991   Volume 23, Issue 6 405-409 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1991.tb03751.x
Browning GF, Chalmers RM, Snodgrass DR, Batt RM, Hart CA, Ormarod SE, Leadon D, Stoneham SJ, Rossdale PD.A survey of 77 normal and 326 diarrhoeic foals in Britain and Ireland from 1987 to 1989 revealed a significantly higher prevalence of Group A rotaviruses and Aeromonas hydrophila in diarrhoeic foals. The prevalence of cryptosporidia, potentially pathogenic Escherichia coli, Yersinia enterocolitica and Clostridium perfringens was similar in normal or diarrhoeic foals. Rotaviruses had a similar prevalence in all age groups of scouring foals up to three months of age, with an overall prevalence of 37 per cent among diarrhoeic foals. The number of cases of diarrhoea varied considerably from year t...
Evaluation of epiglottic augmentation by use of polytetrafluoroethylene paste in horses.
American journal of veterinary research    November 1, 1991   Volume 52, Issue 11 1908-1916
Tulleners E, Hamir A.Epiglottic augmentation was evaluated in 7 horses, using 7 ml of polytetrafluoroethylene (polytef) paste injected submucosally on the ventral surface of the epiglottis. In 6 horses, an Arnold-Bruning intracordal injection syringe, specifically designed to inject polytef into paralyzed vocal folds in human beings, was used. At necropsy 60 days after surgery, group mean thickness measurement 20 mm from the epiglottic tip was 40% greater (P less than 0.01) and, at the epiglottic attachment of the aryepiglottic fold, was 29% greater (P less than 0.01) in the 6 polytef-augmented horses than in clin...
The influence of detomidine and epinephrine on heart rate, arterial blood pressure, and cardiac arrhythmia in horses.
Veterinary surgery : VS    November 1, 1991   Volume 20, Issue 6 468-473 doi: 10.1111/j.1532-950x.1991.tb00357.x
Raekallio M, Vainio O, Karjalainen J.Detomidine (10 micrograms/kg and 20 micrograms/kg) was administered to seven horses with and without epinephrine infusion (0.1 microgram/kg/min) from 5 minutes before to 5 minutes after detomidine injection. One or more single supraventricular premature heartbeats were observed in three horses after detomidine administration. Epinephrine infusion did not modify the incidence of cardiac arrhythmias in detomidine-treated horses at the doses tested. Relatively high momentary peak systolic pressures were registered in some horses after detomidine administration during epinephrine infusion. The hig...
Pharmacologic treatment of priapism in two horses.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    November 1, 1991   Volume 199, Issue 9 1183-1184
Wilson DV, Nickels FA, Williams MA.Benztropine mesylate was used successfully to treat priapism that developed during anesthesia in 2 horses. After IV injection, there was a rapid resolution of signs in both horses, and no side effects were observed. The choice of an effective method to treat priapism is challenging because precise causes in most patients have not been well-defined. Benztropine mesylate is a synthetic compound resulting from the combination of the active portions of atropine and diphenhydramine, and is believed effective because of its central acetyl-choline-antagonizing properties.
Effect of storage on measurement of ionized calcium and acid-base variables in equine, bovine, ovine, and canine venous blood.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    November 1, 1991   Volume 199, Issue 9 1167-1169
Szenci O, Brydl E, Bajcsy CA.The stability of blood ionized calcium (Ca2+) and acid-base variables in equine, bovine, ovine, and canine venous blood samples (n = 15, in each group) stored at 4 C for 3, 6, 9, 24, or 48 hours was studied. Variables included blood Ca2+ and standard ionized calcium (Ca2+ corrected to pH 7.4) concentrations, pH, blood carbon dioxide and oxygen tensions, base excess, bicarbonate concentration, and total carbon dioxide content. Results indicate that storage of blood samples at 4 C for up to 48 hours, despite appreciable acid-base changes, is associated with less than 1.5% change in equine, bovin...

Of the 35 flexor tendon lacerations, 11 horses were killed without treatment and 24 horses were treated. Twenty-two horses were included in determining outcome. Four (18 per cent) returned to their original level of use, nine (41 per cent) returned to limited riding, seven (32 per cent) returned to breeding or pasture soundness and two (9 per cent)...
Mononuclear cell infiltration of the equine endometrium: immunohistochemical studies.
Equine veterinary journal    November 1, 1991   Volume 23, Issue 6 470-474 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1991.tb03764.x
Waelchli RO, Winder NC.Endometrial sections from mares with varying degrees of mononuclear cell infiltration were examined for immunoglobulin (Ig)A-, IgM-, IgG(T)- and IgG(Fc)-containing cells, luminal and glandular epithelial cell Ig-staining and free interstitial Ig-staining, using a peroxidase anti-peroxidase technique. Mares with mild to moderate (Group 2) and mares with severe diffuse mononuclear cell infiltration, superimposed by acute endometritis (Group 3), had significantly higher numbers of Ig-containing cells than genitally-normal mares (Group 1). The differences between Groups 1 and 3 were significant fo...
Time of embryo transport through the mare oviduct.
Theriogenology    November 1, 1991   Volume 36, Issue 5 823-830 doi: 10.1016/0093-691x(91)90348-h
Freeman DA, Weber JA, Geary RT, Woods GL.The objectives of this study were 1) to determine the time of embryo transport through the mare oviduct, 2) to determine whether equine embryos increase in diameter prior to the time of oviductal transport, and 3) to assess the stage of equine embryonic development at the time of oviductal transport. The time of oviductal transport (interval from ovulation to uterine entry) was estimated by collecting embryos from the mare oviduct or uterus at 2-hour intervals from 120 to 168 h postovulation. The time of oviductal transport was 130 to 142 h, since 9 9 embryos were located in the oviduct from 1...
Factors associated with failure of passive transfer of colostral antibodies in Standardbred foals.
Journal of veterinary internal medicine    November 1, 1991   Volume 5, Issue 6 335-340 doi: 10.1111/j.1939-1676.1991.tb03147.x
Clabough DL, Levine JF, Grant GL, Conboy HS.The records of 361 Standardbred mares and their 1986 or 1987 foals were evaluated to identify factors associated with failure of passive transfer (FPT) of colostral antibodies in equine neonates. Sixty-five foals (18%) were classified as FPT based on a serum immunoglobulin concentration of less than 400 mg/dl at 24 to 36 hours of age, determined by the glutaraldehyde coagulation test. The potential association of mare- and foal-related factors with FPT were assessed by reviewing a series of multiple logistic regression models. The season in which the mare foaled and foal exam score, a subjecti...
Measurement of oxytocin concentrations in plasma and ovarian extracts during the oestrous cycle of mares.
Journal of reproduction and fertility    November 1, 1991   Volume 93, Issue 2 437-441 doi: 10.1530/jrf.0.0930437
Stevenson KR, Parkinson TJ, Wathes DC.Jugular venous blood samples were collected throughout a complete oestrous cycle from 9 mares for measurement of progesterone and oxytocin by radioimmunoassay. Mean oxytocin concentrations remained at approximately 1 pg/ml throughout, with no evidence of cyclic variation in the release pattern. Extracts of corpus luteum and follicles obtained from a further 33 mares at different stages of the cycle all contained oxytocin concentrations of less than 10 pg/g wet weight of tissue. We conclude that the ovaries are not a source of circulating oxytocin during the oestrous cycle in this species. The ...
Electromagnetic stimulation of bone repair: a histomorphometric study.
Journal of orthopaedic research : official publication of the Orthopaedic Research Society    November 1, 1991   Volume 9, Issue 6 908-917 doi: 10.1002/jor.1100090618
Canè V, Botti P, Farneti D, Soana S.The effect of pulsing electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) on bone repair was studied in principal metacarpal bones of eight adult male horses: Six horses were treated with PEMFs, and two horses were untreated. In treated horses, Helmholtz coils were applied during a 60-day period to the left metacarpal bones, bored with eight holes of equal diameter and depth, from the middiaphysis toward the distal metaphysis. Eight equal holes bored in the right metacarpal, surrounded by unactivated Helmholtz coils, were taken as controls. The two untreated horses were taken as additional control. The results of ...
Histopathological and ultrastructural changes in simulated large colonic torsion and reperfusion in ponies.
Equine veterinary journal    November 1, 1991   Volume 23, Issue 6 426-433 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1991.tb03755.x
Meschter CL, Craig D, Hackett R.This investigation examines the histological and ultrastructural lesions of the colonic mucosa during terminal experimental infarction and subsequent reperfusion. Four ponies were anaesthetised and subjected to surgical torsion of the colon. Biopsies were collected at hourly intervals for 3 h, at which point the torsions were corrected. Circulation was re-established for 2 h and the bowel was re-biopsied at hourly intervals. The ponies were killed while under anaesthesia. During the 3 h experimental infarction, the bowel became macroscopically thickened and dark purple. Histologically, the muc...
Quantifying the occurrence of early embryonic mortality on three equine breeding farms.
The Canadian veterinary journal = La revue veterinaire canadienne    November 1, 1991   Volume 32, Issue 11 665-672
Meyers PJ, Bonnett BN, McKee SL.This prospective field study was designed to describe the incidence of early embryonic mortality (EEM) and factors associated with the cause of EEM on three equine breeding farms in Ontario during the 1989 breeding season. Early embryonic mortality was defined as the loss of a single embryo during the first 40 days of pregnancy (day 0 = day of ovulation or last breeding). Pregnancy diagnoses and subsequent embryonic losses were observed by serial trans-rectal ultrasonography between days 12-20 (PD1) and 21-30 (PD2), and by trans-rectal ultrasonography or palpation per rectum between days 31-40...
Therapeutic management of ocular squamous cell carcinoma in the horse: 43 cases (1979-1989).
Equine veterinary journal    November 1, 1991   Volume 23, Issue 6 449-452 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1991.tb03759.x
King TC, Priehs DR, Gum GG, Miller TR.The records of 50 horses with ocular squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) presented to the University of Florida Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital over an 11 year period were reviewed to determine the influence of therapy on the outcome of the case. Follow-up information was obtained for 43 of the 50 cases. The disease was more prevalent in the light horse breeds; however, the draft breeds also were at risk. There was no sex predisposition and the average age was 11.8 years. Tumour recurrence was significant when surgery alone was performed. The eyelid and nictitating membrane were the primary si...

Veterinary surgery : VS    November 1, 1991   Volume 20, Issue 6 446-452 doi: 10.1111/j.1532-950x.1991.tb00353.x
Desjardins MR, Hurtig MB, Palmer NC.The structural integrity of subchondral bone in fresh and frozen osteochondral autografts was investigated at month 3 in 10 horses. Two osteochondral autografts were harvested from the lateral aspect of the lateral trochlear ridge of the left talus in each of 10 anesthetized horses. Grafts were frozen in 7.5% DMSO. After 14 days, the thawed grafts were press-fitted into drill holes in the trochlear ridges of the right stifles. A fresh graft from the right hock was implanted in each left stifle. To control for the effects of surgery, a fresh graft was transferred from the right stifle to the le...
Rostral mandibulectomy in five horses.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    November 1, 1991   Volume 199, Issue 9 1179-1182
Richardson DW, Evans LH, Tulleners EP.Rostral mandibulectomy with primary gingival closure was performed in 5 horses with rapidly growing or bleeding mandibular tumors. The technique involved preservation of the most caudal portion of the mandibular symphysis to maintain stability. There were no surgical complications or recurrences, and the cosmetic and functional results were good. The histopathologic diagnosis of all the tumors was ossifying fibroma. Rostral mandibulectomy affords a simple and effective technique of treating tumors of the rostral portion of the mandible in horses.
Thermodilution estimation of cardiac output at high flows in anesthetized horses.
American journal of veterinary research    November 1, 1991   Volume 52, Issue 11 1893-1897
Dunlop CI, Hodgson DS, Chapman PL, Grandy JL, Waldron RD.The purpose of this study was to compare the thermodilution technique for estimation of cardiac output with the indocyanine green dye dilution technique at flows between 10 and 39 L/min in halothane-anesthetized horses. The estimation of area of dye dilution cardiac output curves was made by using the fore-'n-aft (FA) triangle method. This shorthand technique was compared with logarithmic exponential extrapolation and summation (extrapolated area), using 64 cardiac output curves. Then, 256 simultaneous thermodilution measurements were compared with dye dilution measurements calculated by use o...
Heterotopic transfer of fresh and cryopreserved autogenous articular cartilage in the horse.
Veterinary surgery : VS    November 1, 1991   Volume 20, Issue 6 434-445 doi: 10.1111/j.1532-950x.1991.tb00352.x
Desjardins MR, Hurtig MB, Palmer NC.Two 10 mm thick osteochondral grafts were harvested from the lateral aspect of the lateral trochlear ridge of the left talus in each of 10 anesthetized horses. The grafts were frozen in a 7.5% DMSO solution and stored in liquid nitrogen. The horses were anesthetized again on day 14 and the thawed grafts were press-fitted into drill holes in the trochlear ridges of the right stifle. A fresh graft was transferred from the right hock to the left stifle. To control for the effects of surgery, another fresh graft was transferred from the right stifle to the left stifle. The result was two grafts in...

Dhawedkar RG, Jain NC, Mount ME, Bowling AT, Vegad JL.An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was standardised and applied for the detection of antiplatelet and antineutrophil antibodies using a heterologous system consisting of equine platelets or neutrophils and antisera raised in rabbits. The standardised technique consisted of using Immulon type 3 plate, 1 per cent gelatine as a blocking solution, poly-L-lysine buffer as a coating solution, unfixed antigen, 90 microliters test serum, horseradish peroxidase conjugated antibody and o-phenylenediamine dihydrochloride as a substrate. The number of unfixed platelets or neutrophils required fo...
Multivariable prediction model for the need for surgery in horses with colic.
American journal of veterinary research    November 1, 1991   Volume 52, Issue 11 1903-1907
Reeves MJ, Curtis CR, Salman MD, Stashak TS, Reif JS.A survey of 1,965 equine colic cases was conducted from August 1985 to July 1986 at 10 equine referral centers located throughout the United States. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a multivariable model for the need for surgery. Two-thirds of the cases were randomly selected for model development (1,336), whereas the remaining cases (629) were used only for subsequent validation of the model. If a lesion requiring surgical correction was found at either surgery or necropsy, the case for the horse was classified as surgical, otherwise the case was classified as medical. On...
Expression of procoagulant activity by equine lung macrophages: stimulation by blood lymphocytes.
Research in veterinary science    November 1, 1991   Volume 51, Issue 3 278-284 doi: 10.1016/0034-5288(91)90078-3
Grünig G, Winder C, Hulliger C, Witschi U, Hermann M, Jungi TW, von Fellenberg R.Increases in procoagulant activities (PCA) in equine lung macrophages were induced by non-adherent blood lymphocytes which were prestimulated with phytohaemagglutinin for 48 to 72 hours or by supernatants harvested from prestimulated blood lymphocyte cultures. However, prestimulated lymphocyte suspensions themselves expressed PCA which was most probably derived from contaminating monocytes. Because non-adherent cells from lymphocyte suspensions may have attached to adherent macrophages, cells within lymphocyte suspensions might have contributed to the PCAs expressed by lymphocyte-stimulated lu...
Ultrasonic determination of fetal gender in horses and cattle under farm conditions.
Theriogenology    November 1, 1991   Volume 36, Issue 5 809-814 doi: 10.1016/0093-691x(91)90346-f
Curran S, Ginther OJ.Accuracy of transrectal ultrasonic diagnosis of fetal gender by identifying and locating the genital tubercle was assessed in 85 horses and 102 dairy heifers and cows. Examinations were made once (horses and cattle) under farm conditions (cattle) on approximately Days 50 to 100. Definite diagnosis was made by removal of fetuses (horses) or after calving or abortion (cattle). In both species and both parities, accuracy was 100% (109 109 totaled over both species) when the certainty level recorded at the time of examination was 95 or 99%. At the lower levels of certainty (65 to 80%, 85 to 90%), ...
Analgesic and spasmolytic effects of dipyrone, hyoscine-N-butylbromide and a combination of the two in ponies.
The Veterinary record    October 26, 1991   Volume 129, Issue 17 378-380 doi: 10.1136/vr.129.17.378
Roelvink ME, Goossens L, Kalsbeek HC, Wensing T.The analgesic and spasmolytic effects of dipyrone (Novalgin) (2500 mg/100 kg bodyweight) hyoscine-N-butylbromide (Buscopan) (20 mg/100 kg bodyweight) and a combination of both drugs were evaluated in a balloon-induced model of colic, using five ponies with caecal fistulae. The drugs were given intravenously and 0.9 per cent sodium chloride solution (5 ml/100 kg bodyweight) was used as a control. The physiological saline solution and dipyrone had no effect on caecal contractions. After the injection of hyoscine-N-butylbromide and the drug combination caecal contractions ceased within 30 seconds...
