Topic:Clinical Study

Clinical studies in equine research involve the systematic investigation of health and disease in horses through structured scientific methods. These studies aim to evaluate the safety and efficacy of treatments, understand disease mechanisms, and improve veterinary care practices. Clinical studies can include randomized controlled trials, observational studies, and case-control studies. They may focus on various aspects such as pharmacokinetics, therapeutic interventions, and diagnostic techniques. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the design, implementation, and findings of clinical studies in equine medicine, providing insights into their impact on horse health and veterinary practices.

American journal of veterinary research    January 1, 1986   Volume 47, Issue 1 7-11
MacHarg MA, Adams SB, Lamar CH, Becht JL.Bipolar electrodes, strain gauge force transducers, intraluminal pressure recording catheters, and extraluminal intestinal obstructors were surgically implanted in 4 ponies to record myoelectrical and mechanical activity of the distal portion of the jejunum and ileum. After determining normal intestinal activity and pressures, the distal portion of the jejunum was obstructed with an extraluminal obstructor. Myoelectrical and mechanical activity recorded from jejunal segments proximal to the obstruction increased significantly (P less than 0.01), whereas activity distal to the obstruction remai...
[Endoscopic findings in horses with diseases of the upper respiratory tract].
Tierarztliche Praxis    January 1, 1986   Volume 14, Issue 1 91-99
Deegen E.With the aid of a flexible glassfibre endoscope, a 300 W cold light source and a special adapted camera, colour photographs of the upper respiratory tract of horses were taken. These pictures served to present especially the disease processes of the different areas of the upper respiratory tract which lead to a constriction of the lumen. These included proliferation in the nose, guttural pouch diseases and larynx diseases such as hemiplegia, subepiglottic cysts, epiglottic entrapment and rostral displacement of the plica palatopharyngica. Furthermore endoscopic findings of changes in the soft ...

Zeitschrift fur Parasitenkunde (Berlin, Germany)    January 1, 1986   Volume 72, Issue 2 145-151 doi: 10.1007/BF00931142
Diesing L, Steuber S, Ahmed JS, Hörchner F.The sequential appearance of variable antigen types (VATs) of a clone of Trypanosoma evansi was studied in four ponies. Using luminol-dependent chemiluminescence, VAT populations which had been isolated from parasitemic peaks of single ponies, were tested for specificity with serum samples collected from other ponies. When antibody activity was demonstrated in a combination of trypanosomes and serum, it was concluded that a major VAT appeared in common. In the serum of all animals antibody activity was demonstrated to all VAT populations isolated from the other ponies during the first 4 weeks ...

The use of atropine to control heart rate responses during detomidine sedation in horses.
Acta veterinaria Scandinavica    January 1, 1986   Volume 27, Issue 4 548-559 doi: 10.1186/BF03548134
Short CE, Stauffer JL, Goldberg G, Vainio O.Detomidine is a sedative-analgesic which has a pharmacological profile similar to xylazine. There is evidence that the sedative effects are mediated through alpha-2 adrenoceptors. Cardiopulmonary responses were determined using detomidine as the principal agent and as a preanesthetic prior to the induction of general anesthesia. Compatibility with guaifenesin, sodium thia-mylal and halothane were determined. As in the case of xylazine, detomidine produces a slowing of heart rates. This was found to be either sinus bradycardia or heart block. There may be a corresponding increase in systolic bl...
The interaction between some serine proteinases and horse leucocyte inhibitor.
Folia histochemica et cytobiologica    January 1, 1986   Volume 24, Issue 2 163-168
Dubin A, Potempa J, Turyna B.Horse blood leucocyte cytosol exhibits a broad inhibitory activity against serine proteinases. The purified inhibitor was exposed to investigated enzymes (trypsin, chymotrypsin, elastases and serine proteinase from S. aureus) for variable time and the products were analyzed by gradient polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulphate. The molar ratio I:E, association rate constants k on and inhibition constants Ki for the enzymes and inhibitor were determined. The examined elastases form stable, stoichiometric complexes with the inhibitor (Ki less than 10(-10) M), ...
Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in racehorses.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1986   Volume 18, Issue 1 37-42 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1986.tb03533.x
Holmes JR, Henigan M, Williams RB, Witherington DH.The paper describes five cases of atrial fibrillation detected after racing. In four of them, the arrhythmia disappeared spontaneously within 24 h and they were regarded as paroxysmal in type. In the fifth case, which won its race, the arrhythmia persisted for at least 45 h after racing. It was therefore regarded as an example of persistent atrial fibrillation. It was then treated with quinidine sulphate which restored sinus rhythm. It would seem that paroxysmal atrial fibrillation may be a cause of sudden decrease in racing performance.

Kamerling SG, Dequick DJ, Weckman TJ, Tobin T.Sensitive methods for measuring the analgesic, physiological and behavioural effects of opioids in the horse have recently been developed. Fentanyl, a prototypic mu-opiate receptor agonist, has been previously shown to produce a syndrome characterized by marked analgesia and locomotor stimulation as well as tachycardia, tachypnoea and behavioural arousal. To determine whether other opiate receptors mediate some of the actions of the narcotic analgesics in the horse, an agent with activity at kappa- and to lesser extent mu-receptors was studied using a vigorous experimental protocol. Like fenta...
Comparison of three feeding techniques after esophageal mucosal resection and anastomosis in the horse.
The Cornell veterinarian    January 1, 1986   Volume 76, Issue 1 16-29
Todhunter RJ, Stick JA, Slocombe RF.The effects of 3 feeding techniques on healing of a cervical esophageal mucosal resection and anastomosis were investigated in 16 horses. Horses were fed a moistened pelleted diet 1 of 3 ways: 1) per os (n = 5), 2) by nasogastric (n = 5) or 3) by esophagostomy tube (n = 6) until the 14th postoperative day. The pelleted diet was then fed orally in all horses until euthanasia on the 60th postoperative day. Immediate postoperative feeding per os was unsatisfactory, as only 2 of 5 horses survived in this group. Endoscopic evaluation revealed that mucosal dehiscence of varying degrees occurred, wit...

Equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) induced abortions and paralysis in a Lipizzaner stud: a contribution to the classification of equine herpesviruses.
Archives of virology    January 1, 1986   Volume 90, Issue 3-4 273-288 doi: 10.1007/BF01317376
Chowdhury SI, Kubin G, Ludwig H.Out of 30 cases of abortion and perinatal deaths in a Lipizzaner stud in Austria 10 mares died after having shown central nervous system disturbances, ataxias and paralysis. The etiological agent of this "abortion storm" was equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1). The restriction enzyme pattern of the DNA from 5 isolates recovered from fetuses has been analyzed and compared with the known reference strains of EHV-1, -2, -4 and an Austrian vaccine strain. The DNA restriction profiles of the Lipizzaner isolates as well as of the vaccine strain could be identified as being typical of abortigenic strai...
Pharmacokinetics of probenecid and the effect of oral probenecid administration on the pharmacokinetics of cefazolin in mares.
American journal of veterinary research    January 1, 1986   Volume 47, Issue 1 89-95
Donecker JM, Sams RA, Ashcraft SM.The pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of probenecid given IV and orally at the dosage level of 10 mg/kg of body weight to mares were investigated. Probenecid given IV was characterized by a rapid disposition phase with a mean half-life of 14.0 minutes and a subsequent slower elimination phase with a mean half-life of 87.8 minutes in 5 of 6 mares. In the remaining mare, a rapid disposition phase was not observed, and the half-life of the elimination phase was slower (172 minutes). The mean residence time of probenecid averaged 116 minutes for all 6 mares and 89.2 minutes for the 5 mares with...
[Clinical aspects of ovary tumors in mares].
Tierarztliche Praxis    January 1, 1986   Volume 14, Issue 4 501-508
Meinecke B.The present study comprises 31 mares, that showed a permanent unilateral enlargement of the ovary. In 29 patients the ovary in question was removed by a flanc laparotomy in the standing animal. In the histopathologic examination a granulosa cell tumor was diagnosed in 23 cases, a fibroma twice and a teratoma, hematoma, leiomyoma and a cystic ovary each once. Due to the endocrine activity of the granulosa cell tumor, the clinical picture was characterized by changed behaviour and atrophy of the contralateral ovary. Clinically the ovarial blastomas (teratoma, leiomyoma, fibroma) could not be dif...

Neodymium (Nd):YAG laser surgery in the equine larynx: a pilot study.
Lasers in surgery and medicine    January 1, 1986   Volume 6, Issue 5 473-476 doi: 10.1002/lsm.1900060511
Tate LP, Newman HC, Cullen JM, Sweeney C.Laryngeal surgery in the equine is customarily and routinely performed by means of a ventral laryngotomy incision. Such procedures are usually performed under deep general anesthesia with the horse in dorsal recumbency. The objective of this work was to determine the efficacy of an endoscopic approach coupled to a Nd:YAG laser fiber in performing arytenoidectomy. Arytenoidectomy is commonly indicated in the treatment of arytenoid chondritis and in the failure of prosthetic implantation for left laryngeal hemiplegia. This preliminary study was undertaken to determine the feasibility of the endo...

Use of dopamine hydrochloride during general anesthesia in the treatment of advanced atrioventricular heart block in four foals.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    December 15, 1985   Volume 187, Issue 12 1357-1361
Whitton DL, Trim CM.Heart block is a relatively common arrhythmia in the adult horse. It may be a normal physiologic phenomenon or it may have pathologic implication. Four foals in which advanced heart block developed during anesthesia were unresponsive to atropine sulfate and supportive treatment alone. Resolution of the heart blocks was achieved after the addition of dopamine hydrochloride to the therapeutic regimen.
