The purpose of the study was to document the developmental changes in the ventilatory and timing parameters associated with quiet breathing at rest in awake, standing horses during the first year post partum. A mouse model for testing the pathogenicity of equine herpes virus-1 strains. A mouse model was developed for testing the pathogenicity of equine herpes virus-1 (EHV-1) strains. The model was validated with EHV-1 strains that are known to be of a low or high pathogenicity in horses. Alar fold resection in horses: 24 cases (1979-1992). Between 1979 and 1992, the alar folds were resected bilaterally in 22 horses and unilaterally in 2 horses. Abnormal respiratory tract noise and exercise intolerance were the primary complaints prior to surgery. The enterochromaffin (EC) cells have been identified using immunostaining procedures at both light and electron microscopic level. Influence of endometrial cysts on conception rate of mares. A total of 259 normally fertile mares were examined gynecologically by means of rectal palpation and ultrasonography in order to record the presence of uterine cysts and pregnancy. A non-invasive and quantitative method for the study of tissue injury caused by intramuscular injection of drugs in horses. The present study was undertaken to measure the weight of muscle destroyed by an intramuscular injection of phenylbutazone (PBZ) in horses. Effect of enzymes on the growth of human and animal rotaviruses. The growth of group A human, bovine, equine and porcine rotaviruses were enhanced by pretreatment of virus with pancreatin, trypsin, protease, alkaline phosphatase or pepsin and incorporation of these enzymes in maintenance medium. In contrast, alpha-amylase or lipase inhibited the growth of equine and porcine rotaviruses. Hypoxic helium breathing does not reduce alveolar-arterial PO2 difference in the horse. Hepatic disease associated with administration of tetanus antitoxin in eight horses. Seven horses developed clinical or subclinical hepatitis 48 to 87 days after administration of tetanus antitoxin. One horse had mildly high hepatic enzyme activity 120 days after inoculation with tetanus antitoxin. The first horse developed signs of depression, lethargy, and anorexia. Molecular cloning of cDNA for equine ovarian inhibin/activin beta A subunit. cDNAs encoding equine inhibin/activin beta A subunit were isolated from an equine follicle cDNA library and characterized. Slowing the spread of anthelmintic resistant nematodes of horses in the United Kingdom. The growing importance of anthelmintic resistance in cyathostomes (small strongyles) of horses poses a threat to the health and welfare of all types of horses. On the basis of published information on cyathostomes of horses, six recommendations are made for reducing the development and spread of anthelmintic resistant nematodes. The need for restraint in the use of anthelmintics, the application of epidemiological principles of worm control and a greater emphasis on pasture management are the principal recommendations.
