Inflammatory effects of platelet activating factor (PAF) in equine skin. Intradermal administration of PAF (0.001-1 micrograms/site), but not lyso-PAF (10 micrograms/site), in the horse caused an increase in cutaneous vascular permeability which was maximal by 32 min. Responses to PAF and histamine were reduced by coadministration of the histamine 1 receptor antagonist chlorpheniramine, although only the inhibition of histamine-induced responses was dose-related and statistically significant. Acute eosinophilic interstitial pulmonary disease in a pony. An outdoor pony which developed severe respiratory distress in February was shown to have acute interstitial pulmonary disease (alveolitis), which was characterised by a massive exudation of eosinophil rich fluid into the airways. While antibiotic treatment before referral was ineffective, the condition rapidly responded to corticosteroid therapy. No evidence of lungworm was present and it appears that this interstitial pulmonary disease had an immune-mediated aetiology. Bronchoalveolar lavage cytology was of great value in the diagnosis and monitoring of this case.
Reduced endotoxin-induced production of tumor necrosis factor activity by equine peritoneal macrophages exposed to the dual inhibitor of arachidonic acid metabolism, SK & F 86002. Ankylosis of the distal interphalangeal joint in a horse after septic arthritis and septic navicular bursitis. A 6-month-old 300-kg Quarter Horse filly was treated for septic arthritis of the distal interphalangeal joint and septic navicular bursitis that developed as a result of a deep puncture to the foot. Inhibition of interleukin-1 activity by equine synovial fluid. The presence, in equine synovial fluid, of inhibitors of interleukin-1 (IL-1) activity has been investigated by means of an assay involving IL-1-mediated production of PGE2 by synovial cells. Inhibitors of IL-1 alpha and IL-1 beta were identified in normal synovial fluid and synovial fluid from two horses with early joint disease. Secretory activity of equine polymorphonuclear leukocytes: stimulus specificity and priming effects of bacterial lipopolysaccharide. Neutrophil (PMN) contributions to the acute inflammatory process and host defense include generation of bioreactive oxygen metabolites and secretion of granule enzymes. We assessed equine PMN secretion using several PMN stimuli, singly and in combination with bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Epistaxis in two horses with dacryohemorrhea. Unilateral epistaxis in 2 horses was caused by inflammation of the distal portion of the lacrimal system. The origin of epistaxis was identified during physical examination by observing hemorrhage emanating from the nasal opening of the nasolacrimal duct. Dacryohemorrhea caused by bacterial infection was successfully treated with antibacterial drugs administered systemically and instilled into the lacrimal system.

Evaluation of peritoneal fluid following intestinal resection and anastomosis in horses. Postoperative abdominal fluid changes were compared in 2 groups of horses; those undergoing double small-colon resection and anastomosis (n = 10) and those undergoing exploratory celiotomy alone (n = 5). Intradermal testing of horses with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and recurrent urticaria. Six horses with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and 8 horses with recurrent urticaria were skin tested with 67 extracts from 58 allergens, including pollens, epidermals, cultivated farm plants, dusts, molds, and insects. Evaluation of sodium hyaluronate therapy in induced septic arthritis in the horse. This study was conducted to determine the efficacy of sodium hyaluronate (SH) with antibiotic therapy and joint lavage for reducing acute inflammatory and degenerative changes induced by septic arthritis. Methylprednisolone acetate induced release of cartilage proteoglycans: determination by high performance liquid chromatography. A high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) procedure suitable for the simultaneous determination of the molecular size and concentration of macromolecular hyaluronate and proteoglycans in synovial fluid has been developed. Species restrictions demonstrated by the stimulation of equine cells with recombinant human interleukin-1. Pinealitis coincident with recurrent uveitis: immunohistochemical studies. Although experimental models of autoimmune uveitis predict pinealitis coincident with uveitis, there is no direct evidence of pineal pathology accompanying a human uveitis. Exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage in horses with experimentally induced allergic lung disease. The lungs of sensitized horses were exposed to aerosolized ovalbumin. Some horses (n = 4) were given ovalbumin in 1 lung only, whereas in others (n = 7), ovalbumin or vehicle were inoculated in the cranial, ventral, and caudal regions of the caudal lung lobe. Inhibition of equine complement activity by polysulfated glycosaminoglycans. The ability of polysulfated glycosaminoglycans (PSGAG) to inhibit the complement cascade was evaluated. The role of complement in inflammation and infection has been well documented.
