In 10.9% of all sera reactors could be found. The distribution of seropositive horses varied from 4.6% (Salzburg) to 15.7% (Lower Austria). From Tyrol and Vorarlberg no samples could be obtained. It was not possible, to correlate clinical symptoms (infertility, respiratory symptoms, fever and edema) with the infection. It is assumed, that the disease appears in Austria only in a clinical inapparent form.

Analyses of 122 serum specimens, collected during 1985 from horses and ponies in tick-infested areas of Connecticut, revealed IgM antibody in 41 (34%) samples; titration end points ranged from 1:160 to 1:2,560. In polyvalent ELISA, 73 (16%) of 454 serum specimens contained IgM and/or IgG antibody. Seropositivity was highest (32%) for blood samples collected during May. Principato M.Comparative data collected over 4 years show the most frequent species of Gasterophilus infesting free-ranging horses in Umbria (Central Italy) to be G. intestinalis (93.8%), G. nasalis (76.5%) and G. inermis (71%). G. pecorum and G. haemorrhoidalis were less frequent and appeared in 39.3 and 10.8% of the animals, respectively. For each of the 5 species, the duration of gastric and enteric lesions, the average numbers of larvae isolated throughout the year and the probable duration of oral lesions were discussed.
